There’s a coping mechanism we don’t talk about enough.
And for me, it’s been food.
From a young age, I learned to use eating as a way to soften big feelings.
Stress. Loneliness. Overwhelm. Exhaustion.
And here’s what makes it complicated:
Food isn’t something you can just “quit.”
You still have to eat - every single day.
So emotional eating can hide in plain sight.
Even behind “healthy” food.
Even inside wellness routines.
I don’t share this because I’ve figured it all out.
I haven’t.
I still catch myself standing in the kitchen, reaching for something -
when what I actually need is rest.
Or comfort.
Or five quiet minutes to feel what I’ve been avoiding.
What changed everything for me wasn’t discipline.
It was awareness.
Now, when the urge shows up, I pause and gently ask:
– Am I actually hungry?
– Or am I tired, anxious, sad, or overstimulated?
– What do I really need right now?
Sometimes the answer is food.
And sometimes it’s a walk, a conversation, a cry, or a cup of tea in silence.
There is no shame here.
Only curiosity.
Only kindness.
If you’ve ever used food to cope please know this:
You’re not broken.
You’re human.
And you’re not alone.
