Good morning everyone! We are excited to announce that we have hired another staff member. Please meet our new Pre-ETS Coordinator/Independent Living Specialist, Robin Douglass. She is amazing! Please see her bio below:
“Hi. My name is Robin Douglass. I am a new addition to the wonderful staff at Tri Lakes Center for Independent Living. I have over 30 years working in education specializing in at-risk teens and students with disabilities. When I'm not working, I'm out with my two big labs enjoying the great out doors. I am vey happy to be part of the team at TLCIL and look forward to helping our customers live their best lives.”

This week, 54 years ago, millions of Americans watched in horror as journalist Geraldo Rivera exposed the inhumane conditions at Staten Island’s Willowbrook State School—the largest institution in the country for children with developmental disabilities. That broadcast became a turning point, helping spark a national reckoning and the movement away from institutionalization toward safer, more inclusive community-based supports.

NYSID, founded in 1975, emerged from that shift—created as institutions like Willowbrook closed and a new commitment took hold: that people with disabilities deserve dignity, opportunity, and meaningful employment in their communities.

It means listening to lived experiences, removing barriers, and advancing policies and practices that ensure people with disabilities can fully participate in their communities. Together, we can build communities where everyone belongs and is respected for who they are.
