The mammalian dive reflex is a physiologial response that occurs in humans when we submerge our face in cold water. Our heart rate drops and our metabolism is reduced therefore, reducing some of the physiological symptoms associated with anxiety. Our system slows down when we try this technique.
Try this technique the next time you feel anxious or, are having an anxiety attack. Remember to only submerge your face in water for as long as you can stand. If 30 seconds is too long, reduce it. Comment below if you've tried this technique and if it's worked for you 😊

If your mind is racing and your heart feels like it's going to beat out of your chest, grounding techniques can help bring you back to the present moment and give you a sense of control over how you react to stressful situations. Grounding techniques bring you back to the present moment and helps you feel calm. Have you ever known that it was necessary to make a change in your life but, hesitated because you didn't want to experience the temporary uncomfortable emotions associated with that change? In moments like these it's important to tell yourself "Not all positive changes feel positive in the beginning". In fact, a lot of positive changes feels HORRIBLE in the beginning. An example that comes to mind is breaking up with a partner that you know is not "good" for you but, you hesitate because you know that you will experience a lot of pain before you experience the joys from letting go of what is no longer for you. It takes a lot of strength to make positive changes that don't always feel positive but, know that in the long run you will be glad that you did 😊

Changing your thoughts and behaviors helps you change your emotions. One way to change your emotions is to utilize the Opposite Action DBT skill. The key is to use the opposite action of what you typically use. For example, if you feel sad you might typically stay at home alone in your room. To help change your emotion you can try going out in nature and or hanging out with friends/family.
