As you may know, Benson was born with a liver shunt or portosystemic shunt. Simply put, the blood coming from his intestines that should normally be filtered by his liver is by-passing his liver and slowly poisoning and killing him due to the toxins that should be filtered by the liver. Luckily, there is a surgery to fix the shunt, however, it will cost $8,000! We are going through with the surgery at Tufts Veterinary. He is scheduled for a CT scan on February 18th and surgery on the 19th. Benson was rescued by us the day he was supposed to be euthanized. The reason for euthanasia was due to his condition. The chance of him living a normal life or finding a forever home through the shelter was non-existent. Benson was very sick when we first got him. He would cry out in pain when sleeping, vomit multiple times per day, pass diarrhea and having accidents in the house and was very depressed and dull. With medical treatment (proper food and medication) he has completely turned around! Unfortunately, due to the type of liver shunt Benson was born with, he only has a few months to live unless we have surgery performed by a specialist. Benson is only 1 years old! For those of you who have met Benson, you know how wonderful, goofy and beautiful he is. PLEASE help us save Benson! Without surgery, Benson only has a few months to live!
