New Choices Recovery Center โ€“ Prevention Team in Action

Yesterday, the New Choices Recovery Center Prevention Team had the opportunity to attend Mental Health Matters Day at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center. This important statewide event brings together advocates, organizations, and community leaders to elevate the conversation around mental health and ensure our communities have the resources they need.

Our team participated in legislative meetings with Jim Tedisco and Angelo Santabarbara to discuss the importance of prevention, recovery support, and accessible mental health services across New York.

Events like this remind us that prevention and mental wellness are community efforts. When organizations, policymakers, and advocates come together, we strengthen the systems that support individuals and families every day.

You play a role in this work too. Start conversations about mental health in your community, check in on someone you care about, and continue helping reduce stigma.

Thank you to The Mental Health Association in New York State for organizing this impactful day and for bringing voices from across the state together to advocate for change.

๐Ÿฅž Community Breakfast
๐Ÿ“ Salvation Army Schenectady
๐Ÿ—“ Saturday, February 14
โฐ 9:00โ€“11:00 AM

Through our work, we continually assess how our emergency food system is serving our community. Our food providers do incredible work, and we are deeply grateful for their tireless efforts to ensure neighbors have access to meals and pantry support.

By creating a comprehensive schedule of pantry and community meal days and times, we identified a key gap: there are few to no community meals available on Saturdays. This discovery became an important topic of discussion at our Steering Committee meetings and led us to begin convening meal providers to talk through challenges, best practices, opportunities for collaboration, and remaining gaps in mealtimes.

Working with The Salvation Army Schenectady, we identified our shared desire to expand meal access. Through these discussions, we are piloting a new effort โ€” a Community Breakfast.

This breakfast is a pilot project aimed at better serving our community in a way that is both efficient and sustainable. After the event, we will evaluate how it went, identify areas for improvement, and determine how we can continue or expand these efforts if they prove helpful for our neighbors.

Weโ€™re excited to take this step together and grateful to our partners for helping fill an important gap in our food system. ๐Ÿ’›
