On Sunday February 23rd, our agency was dispatched to United States Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook to reports of two patients in cardiac arrest. As you might have seen in local news, the initial dispatch evolved to a six patient incident. We thank for their stellar incident command, as always. Additionally, , MedStar, and responded with ambulances within minutes, if not seconds. Advanced Life Support units and a Supervisor from and responded and coordinated resources through their own independent channels and Monmouth County dispatch, without hesitation. Interoperability is known challenge in large scale incidents. Fortunately we have had the privilege of working with each of the aforementioned agencies during previous large scale incidents. Acquiring this many E.M.S. resources especially, is a challenge not only in Monmouth County, nor New Jersey, but nationwide. We thank each and every agency involved for their commitment to patient care and public safety.

As the snow falls, we would like to introduce our new E.M.S. Supervisor vehicle, primarily operated by our Chief (43-50). This 4x4 capable pickup truck, outfitted for emergency response, replaces our former S.U.V. The repair costs of which were becoming overwhelming. The selection and outfitting of this vehicle was not only thrifty, but took our response area into account as well. We encounter patients amongst rising tides, coastal storms, and on the beach. No longer will we be strictly reliant upon our partners in getting equipment onto the beach and patients off of the beach. We thank our borough council, community supporters, and fundraising members for enabling this purchase.

Additionally, our new E.M.T.’s have proven to not only be committed, but driven. Before the wheels turned, both ambulances were cleaned. Since Friday, three members have been working on completing their driver training and, or sharpening their skills. This evenings adverse weather conditions created an excellent training environment. 1️⃣2️⃣6️⃣ days separate us from Memorial Day. We’re waiting on you.

Last night, the borough committee recognized our crew, , and Law Enforcement Rangers for their recent C.P.R. save. On the morning of November 5th at 06:12, 43 was dispatched to a man down on beach C “Charlie”. Crews found Sandy Hook Law Enforcement Rangers performing C.P.R. on a fisherman. Our recently acquired L.U.C.A.S. Device (Mechanical Chest Compression System) was utilized. A collaborative effort with Paramedic Unit 1232 led to the return of spontaneous circulation (R.O.S.C.) while still on the beach. The combined crews carried the patient to the ambulance in which he was subsequently transported to a hospital. The patient ultimately left the hospital without any major complications. The collaborative efforts of all involved, investments in clinical advancements, and training with our federal partners led to more days spent fishing and a family spending the holidays with their loved one. Great Job.

43-21 and 43-1 members gathered on the Hook this morning for a mass casualty drowning drill. We partnered with National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers, Lifeguards, E.M.S., and Interpreters. Trainings such as these are crucial to improving communications, command, triage, and ultimately patient outcomes. While today was a simulated incident, the unfortunate reality is that our agency has become all too familiar with these typically low frequency events. We take great pride in our response to the niche call nature which the beach provides. The bay doors are open today. Members are always wanted.

You might have heard us mention it once or twice. Today we hosted Sea Bright’s second annual Gary Letizia Memorial Blood Drive. We’re two for two, collecting exactly 37 units of blood once again. Despite our best efforts, on our busiest beach day, this is far more lives saved in a single day. Thank You to the borough council for their support, use of the recreation center, and assistance with signage. Thank you to everyone who donated today and promoted the drive. Especially our friends from and who showed up to donate! See you next year😉
