THANK YOU to everyone who has so generously donated so far. I have deep appreciation and gratitude for you all.

Here is a personal note and some context/background, as we continue to work toward our goal.

As our beautiful city expands in all directions, so must we. As rising costs continue to mount, insurance reimbursements do not meet them and we are chronically underpaid and undervalued within the medical industrial complex.

Since it’s own birth in 2010, Center for Birth has been a scrappy, intrepid and softly persevering labor of love. Thank you to Tina and Nat and theirs for creating this and holding it down for well over a decade. I became the owner in 2023 after having done the bulk of my midwifery training here as a student and working here as a staff midwife with Rainy City since 2016.

Here’s what I know: Center for Birth is an embodied and incarnate commitment rooted in a belief in birthing bodies and the zeitgeist of midwifery licensure, scope, expansion and access. We love this birth center and we know we aren’t the only ones…whether you took childbirth classes here, attended clients, birthed in one of our beautiful tubs, transferred after planning to welcome your new one in this space, labored on the patio or took a walk around SLU in early labor, attended prenatal and postpartum visits, had your baby’s pediatric wellness checks, saw a lactation consultant, received acupuncture in the clinic or simply toured to get a feel for what out of hospital birth could look like.

Our ultimate goal is to organize a formal fundraising event in the future with the help of tireless and creative think-tank friends and clients, complete with auctions and raffles and a joyous gathering to manifest and uphold our hopes and dreams for this work and community resource.

But for now, if you have the flexibility, resourcing or ease in your life to donate any amount that you feel called to it would mean the world to us as we work to hang in there. If you do not or cannot, we feel you and humbly ask that you please consider sharing our fundraiser with your networks, friends, webs and communities. Thank you! Much love and be easy :)

Hi everyone, just an update that todays picnic is CANCELLED due to one of the midwives testing positive for COVID. Out of an abundance of caution, we are minimizing in person interaction amongst ourselves. Hopefully, we can reschedule at a later time but for now stay safe and continue to mask, boost up if able, and hand wash. Love, your midwives.

We're not on FB much these days, but I (Lynn) thought I would share this news that I sent to our Rainy City list last night.:

I am writing today to let you know that my baby-catching days are soon coming to a close. I will be forever grateful to each of you for allowing me to be part of your journey as you’ve entrusted Rainy City with your pregnancy and postpartum care. These last 12 years have been filled with richness beyond what I could ever have imagined, and I thank you for that. I’m ready to move on now to more full nights of sleep, more time with my family and in my garden and who knows what new adventures.

As many of you might guess, I’m not quite ready to leave birth work entirely, so I will be taking on an occasional birth doula/photographer gig, and will be offering my services as a postpartum doula from time to time as life allows.

To our current Rainy City clients, I’ll be finishing up my clinic days in mid-November, but I may be helping out with a birth here and there for another month beyond that.

Happily, I get to pass the baton to Blake Stewart, whom many of you know from her time with us a few years ago as a student midwife. Some of you know her from the births she has attended with us as an assistant since her graduation from Bastyr.

Blake was born and raised here in the Pacific Northwest. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Western Washington University and worked as a doula for several years before entering the Bastyr Midwifery program. She graduated from Bastyr University with a Masters degree in Midwifery and completed the Botanical Medicine program as part of her degree.

Blake is smart and grounded and brings a strong, loving and calm presence to her clinical work. Her knowledge and skills along with her warmth brought kudos from many Rainy City clients who had the good fortune to be cared for by her. She will be a perfect addition to the Rainy City team.

Another post for World Doula Week!

How lovely to look back at photos of some of the doulas we’ve had the pleasure to work with over the years. We worked with at a few births. This photo was taken in quite advanced labor when a doula’s touch can inspire such calm during the brief rest between contractions. Libby Golden now offers her services (doula, massage and Dancing For Birth classes) in Nehalem Oregon.

World Doula Week ends today!
We celebrate all these wonderful doulas who stand by our clients during the birth process. attended 2 births with this client, coming out of retirement for the second. We love when we get to enjoy a meal with our families when doulas cook a meal after the birth. Dolly was known for her cooking flair. While not a doula anymore, she continues to do important work during the childbearing year as a psychotherapist.
