Letting go of that which no longer serves creates opportunity for that which does. A tenet of Chinese medicine is to treat the body where it is at a given moment in time. It is constantly changing, both over the broad span of time -- what is helpful for us when we are 50 will be different than when we were 30 -- and also in the short-term, as we adapt to seasonal changes, and varying life demands. This informs every acupuncture treatment and herbal formula given. What is helpful one year, may be ineffective, or push the body out of balance in the next year. This is is part of why skilled and experienced East Asian medicine can be so great in helping us navigate the different stages of life with resiliency, from periods to menopause, from summer to fall.

After more than twenty years in practice in Seattle, I'm reflecting on the privilege it is to bear witness to the transitions in my patients' lives. Pregnancies, births, weddings, empty nest, adoptions, promotions and new jobs, travel, races and matches and games. And the difficulties too -- miscarriage, deaths of loved ones, the angst of infertility and failed IVFs and periods that arrive, injuries and illness, surgeries, divorce, jobs lost, caring for ill family members. My job is to serve, though many of my patients have been seeing me for years and years, and there's a natural rapport that develops over time. Thank you for consistently displaying respect and kindness, which is so appreciated by a small business owner, especially during trying times like this week with its ice and snow. I feel your smiles and good wishes, and I send them back to you all, with love and gratitude. Happy holidays!

This was in my stories and got a lot of hell YES feedback. 💯For someone wanting a baby, they are everywhere. Talking about this challenge can be hard, for fear of the dreaded advice to just relax, it'll happen, go on a vacation, or the sharing of stories about the friend's journey, or their cousin's neighbor's miscarriage. Bear witness, listen, send a text every now and then asking how you can help without expecting any response.

Shucks, thanks! Although I specialize in menstrual health, fertility, and menopause, I also work on a lot of musculoskeletal and other issues. This woman received regular acupuncture care at her home in Toronto, and experienced a bad flare of foot pain when visiting family in Seattle. I gave her two acupuncture treatments, which helped her so much. 20 years of practice is good for something, I guess. 🤷‍♀️ Now, who is really good in Toronto? I'd be most grateful for any leads or connections with comments below or on DM. Thanks so much!

Second place last weekend in our event at Head of the Charles, the world's largest multi-day rowing regatta. So much fun to race again there with these amazing teammates, and also to connect with visiting friends and family in Boston. The average age of the rowers in this boat is 50:

👀In my 20s I needed to have an unexpected retinal surgery, so I've been mindful of my eye health since. There are many Chinese herbal formulas helpful for the eyes, different ones depending on the issue, and the person. But the chrysanthemum flower and the berry commonly known as Goji, lycii, or Wolfberry, are two easy to use herbs that benefit the eyes. I put a small handful of these in my pot of green tea each morning. (And, yes, I also drink coffee). Clinical studies have found both to lower blood pressure, the flower has antibiotic properties, and the berry stimulates production of white and red blood cells -- among their many other properties. A combination that together clears and tonifies. As always, consult with a certified herbalist. 🙋‍♀️

Other tip: our eyes are focused on screens. Repeatedly look up, ideally at an outside view, far off. Gaze softly at something in the distance, change the focus.

New website launch! For those familiar with my site, it has the same art, design, and photos, so it may not look new. But I've updated copy and content, and I'm grateful for the talented people who managed the notable tech updates that allowed this new site to happen. 20+ years in business, 50+ years of life, and I've learned to keep what works, ditch what doesn't, and surround myself by awesome people.
