As we wrap up National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, one powerful truth stands out: most teens are not using drugs or alcohol.

While statistics often highlight the risks, it’s important to recognize that the majority of young people are making healthy, positive choices every day—and that’s something worth celebrating.

At the same time, education, open conversations, and strong support systems remain essential for those who may be struggling or at risk.

For 45 years, NSYC has been at the forefront of prevention, and we’re not stopping. Because when young people are informed, supported, and empowered, they thrive. 💜

Mental health challenges and substance use often go hand in hand. People may turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression, but substance use can actually make these feelings worse over time.

This is known as co-occurring disorders, and it’s more common than many people realize.
The good news is that both are treatable and early support makes a difference.

💬 Encourage open conversations
💙 Normalize asking for help
🤝 Connect with trusted supports and professionals

When we support both mental health and substance use prevention, we help people build healthier, stronger futures.

Opioids can be highly addictive--even when prescribed--and misuse can quickly lead to serious health risks, including overdose. Many teens underestimate how dangerous these substances can be, especially when they come from a doctor or someone they know.

💬 Talk with your teen about making an “exit plan”--a simple, safe, and judgment-free way to leave uncomfortable or risky situations or where drugs or alcohol may be present. This could mean having a code word, a trusted person to call, or a no-questions-asked ride home.

Va**ng may seem harmless, but most e-cigarettes contain nicotine--a highly addictive substance that can impact brain development in teens and young adults. It can also affect mood, attention, and increase the risk of future substance use.

Many va**ng products contain harmful chemicals, even when flavored or marketed as “safe.” 🚫

The truth: va**ng isn’t risk-free--and for youth, it can have lasting effects. 🧠

Did you know? Underage drinking can seriously affect brain development, school performance, and safety. Research shows that youth ages 12–20 use alcohol more than any other substance--and the younger someone starts, the higher the risk of long-term problems.

The best prevention? Teamwork. Preventing underage drinking works best when families, schools, and communities work together to talk openly, set clear expectations, provide safe activities, and support policies that protect youth.

It's National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week! 📊 🚨

This week marks an annual observance launched to help teens, families, and communities learn the science behind substance use and addiction and separate myths from facts. The goal is simple but powerful: empower young people with accurate information so they can make informed, healthy decisions.

Today we’re highlighting findings from the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. A snapshot of behavioral health, substance use, and treatment trends across the United States, these numbers remind us why education, prevention, and open conversations are so important.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing facts, resources, and insights to help youth and families better understand substance use, mental health, and ways to support healthier choices.
