Whether for your own baby, to create a "stash" in the freezer, to donate milk to other families in need, or to increase your knowledge base and pass it along to others, I want to share this info widely!

Naps for 9-16 months 👶 😴 💤

Between 9-16 months months, the majority of babies are taking 2 naps per day, for a total of 2-3 hours of daytime sleep. ☀️ 🕑

Total nighttime sleep often shifts as well, for a total of 10-11 hours per night. 🌃 💤

These ranges are just guidelines from from the National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep Time Duration Recommendations, by Hirshkowitz et al. (2015) 📑

By this stage, most little ones have shifted to two fairly predictable naps each day, often morning and mid-day/early afternoon.

Naps can vary in length, but a common pattern is one shorter nap of ~45-60 minutes and one longer nap.

Daily rhythms and gentle routines can support the transition from awake time to napping. 🌅 ➡️ 🌃

All naps are good naps. Contact naps, carrier naps, stroller naps, crib naps — whatever works for your family and your routines. 💕

Whatever your little one's nap pattern, if it's working for your family then there's no need to make changes.

But, if naps are feeling stressful — or seem to be impacting bedtime or nighttime sleep — then it's worth assessing what's happening and considering which gentle tweaks or thoughtful strategies may feel worthwhile for your family to try.

Usually making nap changes for a week or so will show if it's working for your baby!😕 ❓ ⚖️ 💡

Questions? Feel free to post them here and I'll do my best to answer.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Testimonial from a Client

"I love how knowledgeable Joy is about a broad range of topics! She helped us with breastfeeding, bowel movements, movement in general, and overall well-being. I felt like I could ask her all of my questions and that she’d have answers for them. I also appreciate how knowledgeable, approachable and easy to talk to you she is. In fact, I recommended Joy to several friends who were struggling!" - Kristin, new mom

Naps for Babies 0 to 6-months-old! 👶 😴 💤

Between 0-3 months babies naps are variable, and are often fairly evenly spaced throughout the day. Total 24-hour sleep is generally ~14-17 hours. 🕑

Between 3-6 months, usually a rhythm develops with 4 naps per day and total daytime sleep ~4-5 hours. 🕑

These ranges are just guidelines from from the National Sleep Foundation’s Sleep Time Duration Recommendations, by Hirshkowitz et al. 📑

Your baby is unique though so if you notice different numbers and your baby seems happy and growing, you're probably right where you need to be with naps.

During this stage, observing your baby's cues works better than a strict schedule.

A pattern may emerge and you can use that to establish daily rhythms.

This often evolves into 4-5 naps of ~30-60 minutes each. Then some naps may lengthen or consolidate.

Naps tend to become more predictable around 6️⃣ months.

All naps are good naps. Contact naps, carrier naps, stroller naps, crib naps — whatever works for your family and your routines.

If naps feel "all over the place," consider creating a morning routine. 🌅

Daylight in the morning can help establish a circadian rhythm. ☀️

But, babies don't produce their own melatonin until around 3 months, so if it feels tricky before then, you're not doing anything wrong.

Questions? Feel free to post them here and I'll do my best to answer.

Have an older baby? I'll be doing a series of posts on nap. Feel free to follow or check back.
