As a member of the Professional Organizations representing Nurses of Color (PONC), the National Black Nurses Association joins fellow nursing and health equity organizations in condemning the violence connected to federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota.

The tragic loss of Alex Pretti, a nurse whose career was dedicated to caring for others, demands accountability, transparency, and meaningful reform. Violence in our communities undermines public trust, public safety, and public health, and stands in direct opposition to the ethical principles that guide the nursing profession.

Guided by the Nursing Code of Ethics, nurses are ethically obligated to protect human dignity, defend human rights, and advocate for policies that promote justice, safety, and well-being. Through PONC, we call for full, independent, and transparent investigations and for reforms that ensure communities and healthcare professionals can live and serve without fear.

This collective statement reflects the shared commitment of professional nursing organizations representing more than one million racially and ethnically diverse nurses across the United States.

In Loving Memory of Dr. Janell Green-Smith, CNM

The National Black Nurses Association and the NBNA Black Maternal Health Equity Task Force mourn the loss of Dr. Janell Green-Smith, a beloved midwife, scholar, and tireless advocate for Black maternal health whose life was dedicated to improving outcomes for others. Her tragic death due to childbirth complications is a profound loss for our community and a sobering reminder that even the most knowledgeable and experienced cannot escape the systemic failures that continue to end Black lives.

Dr. Green-Smith’s work advanced equity, safety, and dignity in maternity care and her legacy will continue to inspire our fight for justice and improved care for all birthing people. ❤️‍🩹

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those she mentored and served. Her voice and vision will live on in the countless lives she touched and in the movement she helped strengthen.

Rest in power, Dr. Green-Smith. Your life’s work must propel lasting change.
