Women’s History Month Spotlight✨

This Women’s History Month, we proudly honor Nicole Wallace, LPN, a dedicated nurse leader, advocate, and NBNA LPN Board Representative whose journey reflects resilience, compassion, and purpose.

Ms. Wallace began her nursing career in 2006 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she provided exceptional care on a medical-surgical unit for over a decade. Today, she serves as a Solid Tumor Nurse Liaison at Levine Cancer Institute, where she plays a vital role in supporting patients and bridging care between inpatient and outpatient settings.

A passionate community advocate, Ms. Wallace extends her impact far beyond the clinical setting. She is a Girl Scout Troop Leader, and active member of Lambda Psi Nu Sorority, Inc., and the Mecklenburg NAACP. Through her volunteerism and advocacy, she works to address social determinants of health and uplift underserved communities.

Ms. Wallace’s leadership within NBNA continues to elevate and empower LPNs/LVNs nationwide. Her excellence has been recognized with numerous honors, including the NBNA Outstanding LPN/LVN Nurse of the Year Award (2022), the NBNA Daisy Health Equity Award (2023), and the Piedmont Black Nurses Association Trailblazer Award.

This Women’s History Month, we proudly celebrate Rosa Norris, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C, a dedicated leader, clinician, and advocate whose work continues to uplift communities and advance the nursing profession.

Dr. Norris is a dual board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, holding a Doctorate in Clinical Nursing Leadership. With over 28 years of healthcare experience, she has provided exceptional care across acute care, long-term care, homebound, outpatient, and academic settings.

Her expertise in primary care, chronic illness management, and psychiatric care, including substance use and serious mental health disorders, reflects her deep commitment to holistic, patient-centered care.

A passionate educator, Dr. Norris has spent more than a decade shaping the next generation of nurses through her work in academia. Dr. Norris’s impact extends far beyond clinical settings. As Chair of the NBNA Membership Committee, she continues to lead with purpose and vision.

This Women’s History Month, we proudly honor Rebecca Harris-Smith, Ed.D., MSN, BA, RN, FADLN, a compassionate, visionary leader whose impact on nursing spans over five decades.

With more than 50 years of service across healthcare, higher education, consulting, and community engagement, Dr. Harris-Smith has dedicated her career to advancing nursing excellence and uplifting future generations. As a respected educator, mentor, and former Dean of Nursing, she has played a pivotal role in shaping academic programs and fostering growth among students and professionals alike.

A committed leader within the National Black Nurses Association, Dr. Harris-Smith is a proud Lifetime Member and Past President of the New Orleans Black Nurses Association. She also serves as a liaison to the American Red Cross and leads impactful initiatives like the NBNA “We Bleed for You” Blood Donor Campaign.

Her extraordinary contributions have earned her global recognition, including being named one of only 35 nurses internationally to receive the prestigious 2025 Florence Nightingale Award for excellence in public health and nursing education. A senior nursing student at Howard University, Taloria represents the next generation of healthcare leaders. Through her role as a Child Care Technician at Children’s National Hospital, she has touched countless lives with compassion and excellence, earning multiple BEE Awards for her impact on patients and families.

Taloria is also a trailblazer for inclusive care. As one of the inaugural Hair Champions at Children’s National, she advocates for culturally responsive practices that ensure every child receives care that is both respectful and affirming.

We proudly honor Benita Chatmon, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, FAAN, FADLN, a dynamic nurse leader, educator, researcher, and advocate whose impact spans local, national, and global communities.

A dedicated leader, Dr. Chatmon has served as President of the Louisiana State Nurses Association, advancing nursing policy, legislative advocacy, and professional development. Nationally, she contributes her expertise as a Board Member of NBNA and through her work with the American Nurses Association. Her global influence continues through Sigma Theta Tau International, where she supports nursing leadership across regions.

Her research focuses on workforce diversity, mentorship, and clinical education—driving meaningful change through funded initiatives and evidence-based practice. Her excellence has earned numerous honors, including the Louisiana Great 100 Nurses, DAISY Award for Extraordinary Faculty, and multiple 40 Under Forty recognitions. With over 27 years of nursing experience, Dr. Tucker is a Board-Certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Nurse Executive. Her work has been instrumental in advancing transitional care and improving outcomes for patients with heart failure, helping bridge the gap between hospital and home-based care.

A champion for community health, Dr. Tucker has led initiatives in partnership with the American Heart Association, educating underserved populations on chronic disease prevention and cardiovascular health. Her leadership extends beyond healthcare; she serves as a West Haven City Councilwoman and has played a vital role in public health efforts, including vaccine distribution during the pandemic.

This Women’s History Month, we proudly honor C. Alicia Georges, EdD, RN, FAAN, a distinguished leader, educator, and visionary, and our esteemed Ex-Officio Member of the National Black Nurses Association.

Dr. Georges has made a profound and lasting impact on the nursing profession through her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to advancing health equity. A former NBNA President, she has dedicated her career to elevating the voice and visibility of Black nurses on a national level.

She served as a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Nursing Education and Practice Advisory Council, a board member of the Black Women’s Health Study, and a board member of AARP, where she also served as National Volunteer President from 2018 to 2020.

Her remarkable contributions have earned her numerous prestigious honors, including the American Nurses Association Mary Mahoney Award for her efforts to increase minority representation in nursing. In 2019, she was also named a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing, one of the highest distinctions in the profession, recognizing her enduring impact and legacy in nursing leadership and service.

Dr. Georges’ work continues to inspire generations of nurses to lead with purpose, advocate for equity, and create meaningful change in healthcare.

With 20+ years of experience across medical-surgical nursing, hospice care, women’s health, and chronic disease management, Tammy addresses social determinants of health and advocates for underserved populations.

As the founding President of the Piedmont Black Nurses Association, she is deeply committed to reducing health disparities, mentoring future nurses, and uplifting her community.

Ms. Woods is a recipient of the 2023 Nurse Leader DAISY Award, was named a 2024 American Nurses Foundation Stryker Scholar for Change, and graduated as a 2024 NCNA Diversity in Leadership Fellow. She also formerly served as Vice President of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.

Ms. Woods leads with purpose, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to equity, making a lasting impact both at the bedside and beyond.

We proudly honor Laurie C. Reid, MS, RN, Treasurer of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA), whose extraordinary career reflects over 30 years of leadership, service, and commitment to advancing health equity.

Ms. Reid has dedicated her career to improving health outcomes for underserved communities. Her impactful work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focused on reducing health inequities among populations disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and other public health challenges.

A former Major in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and former senior nurse consultant with the U.S. Marshals Service, Ms. Reid’s legacy of service spans both military and civilian sectors.

Beyond her professional achievements, she continues to give back through her involvement with the Atlanta Black Nurses Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Recipient of the U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal, U.S. Public Health Service Outstanding Service Medal, and March of Dimes Nurse of the Year.

Dr. Kelly’s excellence has been widely recognized, including receiving the 2018 NBNA President’s Trailblazer Award and the New Orleans District Nurses Association (NODNA) Inaugural Mary Eliza Mahoney Award. She has also been honored as a Healthcare Hero by New Orleans CityBusiness, highlighting her impact beyond the bedside.
