Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program

Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program Our Family Medicine Residency Program is a graduate medical education program for MD's and DO's seeking board certification as Family Medicine physicians.

Our leadership team, faculty, residents, outpatient and hospital communities believe that working together creates the best learning environment—and that means better health for all. There are a few ways that we achieve this:

- We are the only residency program housed at Phelps, which grants us countless opportunities for one-to-one learning with our illustrious faculty and hospital staff.

- We tailor your learning experience to your preferences through elective rotations, offering multiple areas of concentration (e.g., women’s health, global health, hospitalist medicine) and individualized learning plans to support your unique goals during residency.

- We expand your horizons in meeting all the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements for independent, comprehensive practice and beyond.

- We expose you to a variety of patients from our hospital community, which draws from the socioeconomic and cultural diversity of Westchester County, as well as with our partnership with Open Door Family Medical Centers, a nationally recognized patient-centered medical home (PCMH), where both our residents and faculty practice comprehensive health care for our community.

- We put team wellness first through a strong behavioral health curriculum, wellness days for residents, group therapy, end of rotation celebrations, team retreats, and community service experiences.

- We offer a longitudinal health equity curriculum focused on improving health outcomes for all by examining social determinants of health, including but not limited to immigration and migrant health, reproductive justice, medical Spanish, and community medicine.

- We approach education with flexibility, enthusiasm, camaraderie, and a vision for continual improvement through regular check-ins with faculty, residents, administrative leadership, and clinical care teams. Our goal is to expose you to the multitude of experiences that family medicine has to offer to prepare you for a lifetime of personal and professional success. We are committed to graduating family medicine physicians who are well-equipped to succeed in autonomous practice. PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Last day of our community medicine DR trip! :(
Slides 1-4, 11: Today we visited Batey neighborhoods in San Pedro de Macoris with the Dr. Antonio Musa Hospital residents and Consuela Community Clinic team to understand the care of those living in Bateys receive. Being able to work with an interdisciplinary team to learn about specific patient cases in the Bateys and think about the importance of considering all social factors when addressing patient concerns.
Slides 5-10: We also visited a clinic in the town of Consuelo that focuses on pediatric care in the community. They have 5 pillars they focus on addressing as identified by common concerns in the community which are anemia, parasitic infections, breastfeeding, nutrition, and vaccinations. They have programs where they will go into the community and address nutrition by giving out healthy foods and educate people on iron rich foods to help with anemia at the same time. Their clinic runs on a donation based system as they know the financial barriers faced by patients.
Both of these experiences truly reinvigorated our motivating values of empathy and patient connection in order to identify ways to understand patient lives in order to improve care. The compassion to addressing the concerns of the community by the local professionals was truly inspiring.

Spending the day at an all girls orphanage in the Dominican Republic was truly eye-opening. We may have used interactive teaching regarding personal hygiene, parasitic infections, and nutritional eating, assembled personal care kits to distribute to all the girls at the orphanage, but what we learned from them about hope, resilience, and love is truly remarkable. A reminder that healing doesn’t always start with medicine—it starts with humanity.

Run by nuns whose mantra is “God is love, and God loves me,” this place radiates peace, joy, and belonging. We witnessed an abundance of faith, discipline, love, and community—girls thriving in a true home away from home. Their culture of family and compassion showed us what value-based care really looks like: meeting people where they are with honor and understanding.

We hope today’s visit has planted a seed for a long lasting relationship with these truly amazing people.

Also, special shout out to our fellow co-resident Danya for organizing this endeavor, which was a first for this Global Health Trip, but will definitely not be the last!

Day 3: Today we had the opportunity to visit the Dr. Jaime Oliver Pino Hospital 🏥 and participate in morning report with their residents. We are incredibly grateful for their hospitality and support as we presented our case entirely in Spanish! As the morning progressed, we gained firsthand experience with their rounds and insight into their teamwork and patient population.

After leaving Pino Hospital, we conducted a Community Health Resource Assessment during which we evaluated the layout of the neighborhood and availability of fresh produce 🥬 , green spaces, and medical/dental clinics.

It was eye-opening to witness the environment many of our patients are accustomed to. We strive to use this experience to better partner with our patients to achieve culturally-sensitive care. 🇩🇴

Today we visited Musa Hospital Regional, where their family medicine, internal medicine, ob/gyn, pediatrics, and emergency medicine residents graciously spent time to tour us around the hospital. They discussed their experiences as residents in the DR, and together we explored the similarities and differences in delivering patient care in the DR and in the US.

What stood out most was how the residents described their patients: as their friends and sisters and cousins. Anyone who came their way was treated as family. The genuine warmth and kindness is what we also hope to emulate for our own patients and communities at home.

Grateful that we finally made it to the DR to finish up our community medicine month! 🇩🇴 ☀️ Today we explored La Zona Colonial and learned a little bit about DR history, the importance of religion ✝️, the unique culture, food 🥭, and even witnessed first hand the environmental effects on this community. We look forward to continue learning about the Dominican community and how we can best build alliances and serve our Dominican patients. 🥼🩺
