⚡ SAFETY SATURDAY: AED Quick Guide — You Can Use One! ⚡

When every second counts, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can be the difference between life and death. The best part? You don’t have to be an expert to use it. AEDs are designed for everyday people—clear, simple, and step-by-step.

Here’s your quick guide to using an AED confidently:
1️⃣ Turn it on
The moment you open the lid or press the power button, the AED begins talking to you.
It tells you exactly what to do next—no guessing, no memorizing.
2️⃣ Apply the pads
Place the pads on the person’s bare chest just like the pictures show.
The AED will automatically analyze their heart rhythm.
3️⃣ Follow the prompts
If a shock is needed, the AED will tell you when to stand clear and press the button.
If not, it will guide you back into CPR until help arrives.

Think of an AED like having a coach in an emergency. It talks you through every step—even if you’re scared, unsure, or have never used one before.

Knowing how to use an AED could save a life. The more comfortable you are now, the more confident you’ll be in a real emergency.

🔥 Thanksgiving Burn Safety Tip 🔥

Big meal + hot pans + lots of activity = a higher chance of accidental burns in the kitchen. If you get burned while cooking Thanksgiving dinner, here’s what to do:
1️⃣ Cool the burn immediately.
Run cool (not cold) water over the area for 10–20 minutes. This helps stop the burning process.
2️⃣ Remove tight items.
Take off rings, bracelets, or tight clothing before swelling begins.
3️⃣ Cover it gently.
If needed, use a clean, non-stick, sterile bandage or clean cloth. Avoid fluffy towels or materials that can shed fibers.
4️⃣ Don’t use butter, oils, toothpaste, or home remedies.
They trap heat and can make the burn worse.
5️⃣ Watch for signs of a serious burn.
Seek medical help if the burn is larger than 3 inches, extremely painful, blistering severely, or on the face, hands, feet, or joints.

🦃 Tuesday Tip: Keep Thanksgiving Safe & Stress-Free!

Before you dive into the turkey and pie, check out these quick safety tips below!

1. Keep the kitchen safe.
Stay in the kitchen while cooking—most holiday fire emergencies start when food is left unattended.

2. Avoid burns during the big meal.
Use oven mitts, turn pot handles inward, and keep kids at least 3 feet from the stove.

3. Watch out for choking hazards.
Cut food into small pieces for little ones and remind guests to eat slowly. Make sure you know how to respond if someone starts choking.

4. Carve the turkey carefully.
Carve on a stable surface and always cut away from your body. Keep a first aid kit on hand just in case.

5. Frying a turkey? Stay safe!
Never fry a turkey indoors. Place your fryer outside, away from the house, and fully thaw your turkey before cooking.

You’ve probably heard that putting butter or ointment on a burn helps it heal—but that’s actually a dangerous myth! These substances trap heat and can make the burn worse. Instead, cool the area with cool running water or cool compresses for 10–20 minutes and, if needed, cover with a clean, dry dressing.

Sunshine is the Founder, Owner, and Lead Trainer of Sunshine Safety of GA, LLC, where she has dedicated more than 30 years to teaching life-saving skills and empowering others to make a difference. Drawn to both health and education from an early age, her passions have guided her life’s work. What began with teaching stuffed animals during the school year and giving “swim lessons” to fish in the local pool evolved into two lifelong callings: health and teaching. She began her career at 15 as a lifeguard and went on to earn a degree in Exercise Science, later completing her Master’s in Physical Education and Coaching Administration, and her Ed.S. in Administration, Leadership & Policy. Over the years, Sunshine has served as a health and physical education teacher, coach, and now a high school chemistry teacher—all while growing her safety training company. A lifelong learner, she continues to expand her skills, certifications, and influence, with plans to begin her doctorate in 2025.
