Divorce, loss of jobs, infertility, death of a loved one, chronic illness, disability—each time I lost my label, I felt what made me-- me disappearing. I would fall into a depression, wondering what, if anything, I had to offer others. But then each time, my faith in God and His love for me would keep me traveling forward. His miracles, a constant reminder of His unwavering love for me. I adapted to my new label (whatever that happened to be at the time) , becoming the best me I could be. And this system seemed to work until the day chronic illnesses took everything from me. This time I knew it was too much. I had nothing left inside to fall back upon. Bedridden, completely dependent upon others for my care, having lost the ability to do anything and everything I loved to do in life—art, music, cooking, sports, travel, serve others--what good was I to anyone, including myself or God? As I sank deeper into despair, realizing the burden I had become, I wondered if life was worth living. It was then, as I was praying in desperation for understanding, God enlightened my mind. Who I am is not dependent on any label, title or what I do or do not do. The real me is the me who has an amazing ability to overcome and adapt to difficult things in life without becoming bitter or angry. The real me is that very person who doesn’t give up on life because I know life is a beautiful gift worth living! And the real me is that person who even when life has thrown me many challenges and trials, has kept MY FAITH in God, and through His grace come out the conqueror—gaining experience, wisdom and insight in the process! The real me has learned I can find joy and fulfillment, no matter what my circumstances! This is me—the me that will not fade with time, because of calamity or trials, or death. The me that when all the labels I had worn throughout my life disappeared, was still standing strong in my faith, with the joy of living a fulfilling life! This knowledge of who I really am, a beloved Daughter of God, is true empowerment!
