I just learned someone "stole" from me. Let me explain & Respond to this:
π£ A small business owner reached out to me and informed me that someone who attended my last class had photographed the PDF created for the attendees of that class and posted it in a forum online, one the offender and this person are both members of. π€―
π This is not something I have given consent to do. The attendees paid for the information, the time put into creating the class, the time spent presenting and answering questions... I did NOT give permission for the information I spent hours gathering, putting into an easy-to-read document, and giving as a hand-out for personal reference to be freely shared on a Facebook forum, or ANYWHERE.
I certainly didn't get financially compensated for the additional 800+ people who got to view it, either.
1. Do I believe there was good intent to share and empower other people? Yes, I inherently do.
2. Do I believe you THOUGHT about the impact to a small business before doing so? No, I don't believe consideration was given beyond question 1.
I've seen this happen before: one person purchases a creation/class/intellectual property of another and then freely shares it, or shares it for their own profit with others.
π That's theft. Just don't do it. You need and should seek to get expressed consent to share the hard work of others.
βοΈ Moving forward, anyone who does NOT receive my expressed and written consent to share class content will be forbidden from attending.
I want to keep creating, sharing, and empowering other people. And that takes my time, my energy, my life-force to do. I will hold boundaries such as this to keep from draining myself and losing the passion that drives these classes to exist for my community.
Thank you. And happy Small Business Saturday!
