We built this special place from the ground up, together with the community we serve. We designed every service to meet and evolve with our patients’ needs. Our doors are always open, and no one is ever turned away because they cannot

pay. Here, medical professionals from across the country come to learn and expand their skills. And our community health programs help people get care without having to travel far. Health Equity International believes good health helps everyone reach their full potential. Through quality, dignified, compassionate services, we are building a healthier world.

Kendie knew the pain she was feeling in her seventh month of pregnancy was not normal. She traveled for over two hours to get to St. Boniface Hospital from her home in Leogane. Our team gave Kendie an emergency C-section, but baby Garvens Pierre needed additional help. For twelve weeks, we cared for him in our NICU to help him grow big and strong. "They gave me all the care I needed to get for myself and for my child," said Kendie. "After three months in the hospital, I am going back home with happiness and pride."

Every supply shipment that arrives at St. Boniface Hospital is a small miracle. Every step of the process is fraught with uncertainties. Is access to the port cut off today? Are the roads safe enough to travel? Is there enough fuel for the vehicles? So many logistics need to go right for every shipment, and none of them are a given in Haiti. But there is no alternative: we must do everything we can every day, or the hospital can't run. So even when every odd is against us, we find a way to make these everyday miracles happen.

Jean Ricot has been a rehabilitation specialist at St. Boniface Hospital’s spinal cord injury (SCI) center for more than 15 years. He has done thousands of physical and occupational therapy sessions for hundreds of patients with SCIs and patients recovering from strokes, surgery, or injuries. Last year alone, he and our SCI rehabilitation team conducted 3,716 physical and occupational therapy sessions for SCI inpatients, and an additional 712 sessions for patients recovering from other conditions. Our internal medicine department provides inpatient care to over 800 adults per year. Because we never turn patients away, they see a wide range of cases—everything from malaria to complications from diabetes. With quality care and individual attention, our internal medicine team works around the clock to help patients heal.

A pipette is an essential laboratory tool used to measure and transport small volumes of liquid. Here, one of our lab workers is using a pipette to perform a blood test. While it may seem simple, there are actually a lot of steps and techniques involved to make sure you're taking—and dispensing—the correct amount of material. Our lab technicians are great at what they do and are a key part of our care team.

Brancardiers—also known as stretcher-bearers—transport patients across the hospital campus to get from one service to another. There are so many jobs that help St. Boniface Hospital run like clockwork, and each one is important.

This year's calls on us to stand with science. We take an evidence-based approach to everything we do at St. Boniface Hospital, from community health to sustainability. But it's not enough for evidence-based medicine to be an exception and not the rule. All of us—everywhere!—must follow evidence, facts, and science-based guidance to protect the health of every person in every country around the world.
