Low ferritin is one of the most overlooked causes of fatigue, brain fog, hair shedding, exercise intolerance, and heart-racing symptoms — especially in women.
Many lab ranges label ferritin as “normal” even when levels are far below what your body actually needs to feel well. In clinical practice, many women begin experiencing symptoms long before anemia appears on a CBC. That means you can feel exhausted, short of breath, and mentally foggy while your labs are still marked “normal.”
Supporting healthy iron stores is about more than just taking an iron supplement. We also need to evaluate:
• Root causes of depletion (heavy cycles, pregnancy, gut absorption issues, diet)
• Proper iron forms and dosing
• Cofactors like vitamin A, copper, B12, and protein intake
• Ongoing monitoring to safely restore optimal levels
If you’ve been told your labs are “fine” but you still feel drained, it may be worth taking a closer look at ferritin.
