I still remember coming home from college, newly married, and hearing my brother say, “Duuuude. You are the FATTEST I’ve EVER seen you!”
My wife and I had just gotten married, moved away to school, and I was working hard trying to get the best possible grades I could so I could get into Medical School.
My studying days were LONG and STRESSFUL and our budget didn’t allow much for food. We didn’t eat very healthy. We didn’t have a good sleep routine and would stay up late and sleep in late every chance we had. You know, typical college students.
Exercise and eating healthy used to be important to us but now, getting good grades, enjoying married life, and living with a woman were consuming my focus.
I didn’t know how to balance and prioritize everything yet.
Soon we began to feel gross. I felt GROSS. I found myself hiding in baggier clothes. I now had a belly that jiggled every step I took. I had “love handles” as some people like to call them. I felt FAT, FATIGUED, and DISINTERESTED IN S*X. I was often DEPRESSED. I didn’t have that pep in my step.
Our bodies were both softening more than we wanted to admit. And my brother confirmed my plumpness with his honest brotherly words. These words haunted me through the years but in a good way. Instead of being totally offended, I took it as a challenge.
Little by little my wife and I have continued to make small changes. Our healthier changes evolved over the years and included nutrition, exercise, sleep, and communication in our marriage. Slowly I have become healthier physically, I have more energy and we’ve become healthier in our marriage. My energy has blessed me to be more focused with work AND have more quality time with my family.
