So Ms. Mya Louise has been having some trouble standing for the farrier..she usually requires a few breaks and pulls her hooves back often. She also had been looking stiff on her left front..not off, just stiff, so 6 weeks ago, I put her on Legacy joint pellets (I have always loved the combo of yucca, msm, glucosamine, and chondroiton all of which this supplement has). I hadn't really "noticed" a huge difference..just not so much stiffness, but today she had her feet trimmed and she only needed 2 small breaks and hardly pulled her hooves back. I will take that as a win!! Now the not so great part. Legacy pellets are $48.75 (including taxes) locally for a 40 day supply. That is just $1.22 per day, but with having to feed hay 2 summers in a row, I will say that we need to have a sponsor for her pellets. If anyone would like to sponsor her pellets (or even a portion of her pellets) please pm me.

Note: this supplement can also be ordered online through Valley Vet (lower price, but shipping cost unless a greater quantity is ordered). It can be as low as 77 cents per day
with the 160 day supply at a cost of $121.95.

Looking for a new horse? Want an amazing breed that is versatile and loyal? Want to help a horse who has been thrown away after years of making money for previous owners/trainers? The Standardbred Retirement Foundation works tirelessly to pull Standardbreds from kill pens and place them in their forever homes. These horses, through no fault of their own, end up in kill pens after they are no longer "useful" to their owners. Many are teen or aged horses, some may have past injuries, some may have current injuries, but they ALL have one thing in common, they are one of the best breeds that you will ever meet. Loyal to a fault, versatile, will give you their all and then some. I've never met a Standardbred that I didn't like and I worked the with them on the track for many years. These horses are used to standing in cross-ties for hours at a time, regular visits from farriers and veterinarians, regular blood pulls, insane amount of tack going all over the place, frequent long hauls to race tracks, staying in unfamiliar barns, etc. They tend to be quiet and kind hearted. From english to western, jumping to driving, they excel at whatever you ask of them and they need our help. If you are in a position to adopt or foster, SRF has hundreds of horses in their care and many are waiting for their forever homes. Adoption/foster information and application are on their website and you can follow them on Facebook. https://www.adoptahorse.org/ Standardbred Retirement Foundation - Adoptahorse.org

Snooky has had a good bit of weight loss since she's been on the anti-inflammatory medication (which can cause weight loss) , so Dr. Peddy had me increase Snooky's feedings to four times per day and Dr. Urban had me add aloe juice and papaya puree to her diet. Aloe and papaya can heal the stomach (which can be damaged by the anti-inflammatory) and they also increase nutrient uptake. She started on the aloe and increased feedings 6 days ago and I can already see improvement. I started the papaya puree this morning. We also restarted her yucca supplement as it is a natural anti-inflammatory and helps with wright gain. Hoping these changes help her. She continues to take the Chinese Herbals for her cancer and as she is still with us, they are obviously helping. Her disposition remains pleasant and she continues to trot/canter in the field, enjoy back scratching sessions with her son, and she greets me when she sees me. Overall, I am pleased with how she is doing. As always, funding is desperately needed to help purchase all of her medications.

This campaign is to help raise money needed to treat our POA pony's cancer.  RAs Apache Princess aka Snooky has been a part of my family since 1985.  She was my family's first pony and we have been through a lot together.  In 2001 I was diagnosed with stage 3 malignant melanoma that had spread to...

It's a beautiful day in central PA. Spending the day outside!

05/11/2017

I started giving Snooky mini massages in the evening to help with stress and sore/pulled muscles. She's never really been a fan of getting a massage, but these past few days she's seemed to enjoy them. She stands quietly and eats her dinner while I work on her hind quarters. The groin pull that she suffered a few weeks ago is still visible, so I'm certain that it is still uncomfortable if not painful to her. I can't work on those particular muscles, but hopefully working on the surrounding muscles will aleviate some of her discomfort.
