The holiday of Passover is approaching and four is a very significant number on this holiday. Here is a closer look at the etymology of “four”!
When a student asked about forty not being *fourty, we investigated. Some of the etymological relatives were surprising.
What's an etymological relative? Words related by a common root, or etymological ancestor from Latin, Greek, Old English, or other languages.
A few years ago, I realized I was misspelling forty (as fourty) while writing a check. It still cashed. The bank wasn't concerned about the spelling. I have to remind myself of the correct spelling each time I write that word.
