We heard the story as kids, my brother and I.

Dad was hit by the only car in New Riegel, Ohio. His legs were broken and he was in the hospital for a long time. My grandparents moved to Tiffin to be near him.

My brother and I often wondered if there was a newspaper report on his accident. Of course this was in the late 1930s...did New Riegel have a paper we wondered? I tried a few online searches but didn't come up with anything.

A few years ago I was in Tiffin and had just one hour before I was meeting with high school friends. I decided to have a quick peek at the microfilm of the Advertiser Tribune our local paper. I stopped by the Tiffin Library.

I wasn't sure where to start exactly. I was pretty sure of the approximate age my dad was and about the time my grandparents had moved to Tiffin due to his accident.

With a quick prayer, I decided to dive into the 1939 records. I didn't even know the time of year so I tackled December 1939 and began to work to backward to January.

I hoped to move a lot faster and after about 45 min I was still in December. Just as I was about to give up I saw the article. Page of 1 of December 8, 1939. "New Riegel Child May Also Have Skull Fracture." I was stunned that I had found it.

The full horror of what happened to my dad hit me when I read the article. He had a skull fracture, broken legs, a concussion and had not been expected to live. Having children of my own, all I could think of was how my grandparents must have felt, thinking their son may die. I felt ill.

When it looked like he may survice he was transported by car to Tiffin Mercy Hospital, still on Market Street back then. (My brother and I were born in the same hospital in the late 50s).

His last living sister, who was only about 4 years old at the time says she remembers people saying the priest gave him the last rites. She said he was in the hospital for 120 days.

Turns out it was not the "only car in New Riegel". However, why he was out on the street on a weekday in December in early evening is anyone's guess. He apparently ran between parked cars when he thought he saw his cousin drive past. Those early cars were no joke. Most were heavy as a tank. Thank God he wasn't killed.

Oddly enough, had he not been hit and my grandparents not relocated to Tiffin, my parents would not have met. They met in Tiffin in July 1952.

Family Mysteries? I can find yours too!

My great aunt, Maggie, was born to a single mother in 1856. She never wanted to say who her father was. We had only ever heard that her mother, Barbara (my great grandmother), had been married once before and her first husband, Peter, had died of comsumption.

After Peter's death, Barbara had left her small town for a few years and came back eventually with a two year old child (my Aunt Maggie) in tow and no husband. Quite a scandal in the 1800s.

After digging through county birth, death and marriage records, I found the name of Maggie's father, an Irish guy from the next town over, who for whatever reason did not marry her.

More than that, I found that Barbara and Peter had a daughter, Catherine from their marriage. At 8 months old Catherine had passed from "seizures" and 4 months later Peter died of consumption.

My great grandmother, Barbara, likely went off the rails after losing a child and a husband within months of each other. She couldn't bear to give up my Aunt Maggie after such devasting losses.

Such was the love between Barbara and Maggie that when Barbara signed her home over to Maggie in her old age, she noted on the will, "in consideration of love and affection."

Maggie took care of her mother until Barbara's death in 1941.
