The Second-Career Nurse: Why More Professionals Are Choosing Nursing at 30, 40, and Beyond
Nursing is no longer just a first-career choice. Across the country, we're seeing a surge in second-career students—professionals from business, education, technology, and more—choosing nursing as their next chapter.
Why now?
1. Purpose-Driven Work: After the pandemic, many professionals reevaluated what matters. Nursing offers tangible impact.
2. Job Security: With 800,000 nurses projected to leave the workforce by 2027, demand has never been higher.
3. Life Experience as an Asset: Older students bring maturity, communication skills, and diverse perspectives that enrich patient care.
4. Accelerated Pathways: Programs like SJCN's 18-month Accelerated BSN make career transitions feasible without starting from scratch.
The question isn't "Am I too old to become a nurse?" It's "What am I waiting for?"
What's your career change story? We'd love to hear it.

In 1886, ten Franciscan Sisters arrived in Springfield with a mission: care for the community. When they realized education was the key, they began teaching each other.
Women, training women, to serve others.
140 years later, that's still exactly what we do.
On International Women's Day, we honor the sisters who started it all — and every woman who has walked through our doors since. The students balancing families and full-time jobs to earn their licensure. The faculty who show up to mentor as much as they teach. The alumni leading healthcare across central Illinois.
To every woman who chose this profession: thank you. You are the reason St. John's exists.

March is and we're honoring the 10 Franciscan Sisters who founded St. John's College of Nursing in 1886.
These women came from Germany with a radical vision: educate women to care for their community. At a time when women's education was limited and nursing wasn't yet professionalized, they built something that would last 140 years.
They believed education was the key to service. We carry that belief forward today.
This month, we're celebrating their legacy and the incredible women (and men!) who continue their mission.

Real patients. Real hospitals. Real experience. 🏥
Our affiliation with Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) means our students get clinical placements at leading healthcare facilities—not competing for spots or settling for limited experience.
Plus, final-semester students can turn their immersive clinical into a PAID orientation with employment agreements.
Clinical education should be a career advantage—not a barrier. For students preparing for rotations, clarity and preparation make all the difference. We’re here to provide insight and support every step of the way.

History

In 1886, the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis founded St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing. Their mission was to care for the sick and needy of the community in a spirit of joy, respect and commitment to competence. From that day to the present, the values and vision of the Hospital Sisters have underscored and directed the efforts of the faculty and students.

Initially the school was created as a two-year diploma program to educate members of the founding religious order. In 1912 the school accepted the first lay women. In 1952, when the National League for Nursing first began its accreditation program for schools of nursing, St. John’s was among those who came forward to meet this new challenge.

St. John's School of Nursing transitioned into St. John' College in 1991. Today, St. John’s College students can earn a bachelor or master’s of science degree in nursing. Students may attend a wide variety of colleges and universities to study the arts and sciences prior their immersion in nursing theory and practice at St. John’s College.

St. John’s has been cited as the oldest Catholic hospital based school of nursing in the United States. During our long and rich history, we have undergone many transitions. However, the constant has been dedication to the education of professional nurses whose practice exemplifies excellence in health care.
