Surely this is not a coincidence… right? I’m flying out to Denver today for a visit with my nieces and a loooong overdue mountains/hiking vacation. I go first to the USO for snacks and the quiet room to reflect on the distressing events of the week and center myself before airport chaos. I’m reflecting on losing my precious Clover the previous day, getting ready to leave to get to security and my gate when Mango shows up to the USO and comes straight to me. Who is Mango you ask? She’s a therapy dog. She’s trained to go to people in distress and comfort them. She came to me, sat down, tried to kiss me (mom/handler told her not to because they also go to hospitals) and snuggled with me when I sat down. When I looked at my watch, it was 1435 - almost exactly 24 hours to the minute after Clover took her last breath. Note the last photo is a text to my mom - which I sent approximately half an hour after the euthanasia was administered. Something else - they come to the USO every other Thursday. This is not their normal Thursday but they had to switch with someone. I’m a pretty logical and analytical person, and yet I want to believe this was fate and not coincidence. Thank you, Mango and Cindy for helping this therapist’s broken heart start to heal. It means more than you’ll ever know. 😿💔❤️‍🩹🦮

Unfortunately, I had to cancel appointments today to say goodbye to my best friend of over 17 years, Clover. She started declining about 3 weeks ago. Treated her for a herniated disc with medication the past several weeks and at 0200 today, she had a grand mal seizure. I knew then it was probably a brain tumor - just like my dad had - and that I had to make the compassionate choice. She had two more that we know of prior to taking her in just before 1400 today. I’m drained, empty, and devastated. I had planned time off for a family matter and vacation starting tomorrow and returning September 8. We just started a day early. Please note I will not be reachable during this time. If you have a mental health crisis in the meantime, please dial 988 any time, anywhere in the country. I will be in touch again on September 8.

Last night I had the pleasure of meeting the brilliant and hilarious - my spirit animal in human form. What struck me the most about her talk was her authenticity in saying how she feels about living her truth. Of particular note to me, she commented on how devastating the defund the police movement has been to smaller communities. Upon meeting her face to face, I explained what I do in my private practice and thanked her for speaking the truth about how valuable our law enforcement are. I openly criticize these short-sighted and harmful sociopolitical anti-authority movements borne of ignorance, amid backlash that simply loses me friends and colleagues. (I will not stop advocating for the record) However, this brave, fearless woman did it in front of hundreds of people in a liberal town and audience that overwhelmingly seems to hate the police. It could have the consequence of drawing criticism and losing her some readership (although at over 40 million books sold and a tv series, she’s probably 👍🏻👌🏻). Metro St. Louis’ discord is thanks in part to Ferguson’s proximity and a nationally-known crime crisis with racially divisive mindset. But she did it anyway. That is conviction and confidence personified, and I love her for it. So, please buy her books and consume her current and future tv and film adaptations. She’s a real one.

😇 As a therapist who works primarily with trauma presentations, it’s imperative to have a sense of humor (and to know when and how to use it). Helps when you yourself have a trauma history and understand how it can feel!

😔 Grief strikes us all, including counselors. I know I won’t be able to focus on work for a bit, so I’m canceling all sessions until further notice to give myself a period of bereavement and to be with family.
