“To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.” - To Know The Dark, by Wendell Berry

Long before there were borders, before maps gave this place a name, people came here for medicine. 🌿💫

This high-desert basin—ringed by mountains, fed by snowmelt, shaped by wind—has drawn human life for thousands of years. Archaeological record and oral tradition tell of Indigenous nations moving seasonally through this valley to gather roots, resins, seeds, and flowers; to hunt, trade, pray, and heal. The land itself was the pharmacy, the classroom, the calendar. 🫶✨

Blanca Peak—Sisnaajiní—has stood as witness to all of it. 🏔️

Sacred to the Diné and revered across cultures as a point of orientation, Blanca marked passage, return, and responsibility. People traveled beneath its gaze to harvest medicines they knew by timing and terrain, carrying knowledge through generations—knowledge that was precise, relational, and inseparable from place 🐾.

Later came Hispano settlers, bringing Old World herbal traditions that braided with Indigenous plant knowledge already rooted here, shaping a distinctly bioregional medicine culture that persisted through hardship, colonization, and change. 🏜️

When we harvest today, we are stepping into that long continuum—not claiming it, not recreating it, but listening carefully to what remains and how it asks to be met now. 🧘‍♀️

These photos hold small moments of that practice: moving slowly, harvesting lightly, leaving much behind. Most of our remedies begin this way—made from ethically wildcrafted plants, gathered in season, in relationship with land that has fed healers for millennia 🌲.

Ethical wildcrafting isn’t a trend—it’s how medicine survives in a changing world. 🌎 💫💗

🔥❄️🌲 The Mythic Muscle Trio 🌲❄️🔥

Forged from fire, frost, and forest, our bestselling muscle salves draw on the wild anatomy of the Sangre de Cristos—where heat, cold, and earth exist in constant conversation. 🏔️ 🏜️ 💦

Each balm follows a different elemental path, inviting you to choose the medicine your body needs most in the moment:

✨ Dragan Balm — an icy-cool herbal analgesic that soothes sore muscles with allies like arnica, elder flower, fireweed, and white horehound, enhanced by menthol crystals and cooling essential oils.

🔥 Phoenix Balm — warming, spicy, and circulatory, crafted to awaken tired tissue and restore heat where it’s needed. Its fire comes from infused oils of cayenne, ginger, and turmeric, paired with warming essential oils.

🌿 Chiron Balm — a grounded, restorative blend of full-spectrum botanicals for balanced, everyday muscle care, featuring a powerhouse of juniper berry, fireweed, self-heal, yarrow, and elder flower.

Born from the land—using many locally wildcrafted herbs—shaped by season, and crafted by hand, this trio offers herbal relief for bodies that work hard, roam far, and live close to the elements. 🌿💫🧘‍♀️

There are certain scents that stop me in my tracks — and high desert sagebrush is one of them.

This Desert Dawn Botanical Hand & Body Wash is built around our own in-house steam-distilled sagebrush hydrosol, capturing the plant exactly as it exists on the land: resinous, green, sun-warmed, and alive. In the shower, it’s honestly breathtaking — like stepping into a wide open sagebrush plain after rain. Mineral, aromatic, grounding. Truly bathing yourself in the high desert.

Sagebrush has long been valued for its cleansing and clarifying nature, both energetically and practically, and we wanted to honor that in a way that felt embodied and luxurious. This wash is made with gentle, all plant-based surfactants and soothing aloe, naturally forming a thick, gel-like lather that leaves skin clean, soft, and refreshed — never stripped.

If you’re craving a daily ritual that connects your body back to place, this one is special.

Our December newsletter went out today! A little late in the month but we’ve been busy 😉 check it out & if you’re not already, be sure to subscribe to stay up to date on upcoming events & new workshops in 2026!

December has arrived in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Snow settles into the piñon–juniper forests, daylight thins, and the land exhales into true winter. Mornings begin slowly, wrapped in frost and silence, while woodsmoke drifts low and the mountains hold their breath. The world narrows, invit...

✨New Blog! ✨Our latest addition to the Forest & Field Dispatch pays homage to the junipers of the San Luis Valley and the deep medicinal lineage they carry.

Before I learned the names of the junipers that shape our region, I knew their scent.
I remember walking down toward the cool ribbon of Ojito Creek—late afternoon sun dropping behind the ridge, sagebrush silvering in the wind—and catching that unmistakable aroma: resin, desert wind, and something older than language. I could smell them before I could see them.

Across Indigenous cultures of the Southwest and Great Basin, juniper’s uses are vast, consistently appearing as a protector, purifier, and boundary-setter—a medicine of cleansing, clarity, and strength. Modern research echoes this ancestral understanding, highlighting constituents with notable anti-inflammatory actions and remarkable neuroprotective potential.

If you’ve ever wondered what makes juniper such a powerful ally—bioregionally, medicinally, and spiritually—this one’s for you.

Built for sun, wind, and wild places.
Because out here, the elements don’t take a season off—and neither should your protection. ☀️ ❄️ 💨

In the San Luis Valley—where the wind comes off the ridgelines like a living force, where the sun sits sharp even in January, and where the air dries you out just for stepping outside—your skin needs more than a basic balm. It needs allies shaped by the same wild places we call home. 🌿 🏔️

At Ecozoica, we make our products with this landscape in mind: the bright high-desert sun, the freezing dry cold, the relentless wind. And right now, these two Sangre Sol essentials have been absolute staples for keeping our own skin protected through it all:

🌞 Sangre Sol Mineral Sun Protection Stick
For faces, noses, hands, knuckles, tattoos—any part of you the winter sun loves a little too much.
Our mineral & botanical balm blends nourishing plant butters (shea, mango, coconut) with organic seed oils and non-nano zinc oxide for clean, broad-spectrum protection. It melts into the skin, leaving a soft, moisturizing barrier that shields against wind, cold, and high-altitude UV—without the chemical sunscreens. Scented with a blend of lavender, cedar wood, juniper, rosemary & frankincense essential oils to offer an uplifting yet grounded essence of alpine air.

❄️ Sangre Sol Elemental Lip Shield
Your daily companion for mountain weather, desert dryness, and wind-burned lips.
This lip shield is deeply protective without feeling heavy. A smooth, conditioning blend of calendula-infused jojoba, cocoa + shea + coconut butters, castor oil, raspberry seed, and carrot seed oil creates a long-lasting moisture barrier that stands up to cold temps, high winds, and dry valley air.
A blend of lavender, peppermint, and spearmint essential oils offer a refreshing, clarifying, lightly cooling finish.

It’s become our go-everywhere stick—pocket, pack, truck console, ski coat. 🎿 🎒

✨ If you’re spending time outside this winter, these Sangre Sol staples were made with you in mind. Shop online for yourself or a gift for other winter lovers this holiday season. Link in bio 👆
