Postpartum Medicaid coverage will expand from 60 days to one year under legislation signed into law Thursday evening by Missouri Gov. Mike Parson.

The state Department of Social Services estimates the extension signed Thursday will cover more than 4,000 people who otherwise go uninsured two months after the end of pregnancy.

This change is a major step forward in improving maternal health in our state.

The maternal mortality rate in the United States is the highest it’s been since 1965. If that doesn’t make you furious—it should.

This week, we’re getting loud about passing the Momnibus Act. Back on the floor for a third time, the   is 13 bills designed to reduce preventable maternal deaths in the United States, and close the racial inequality gap in maternal health outcomes.

If everyone who is a mother, has a mother, knows or cares about a mother raises their voice and shares their stories, this bill will pass.

We can’t let one more year go by, or lose one more life!!

These bills can increase access to doulas and birthworkers by making private insurance companies cover services provided by doulas and midwives in Missouri.

Stay tuned for more legislative updates!

❓️Are you familiar with reproductive justice❓️

📚 If not, you must read the book Reproductive Justice by Loretta Ross and Rickie Salinger.

Reproductive Justice puts the lives and lived experiences of women of color at the center, acknowledging that many factors, including class, race, sexuality, and gender identity, represent the many intersections of a person.

For Black and non-Black people of color, reproduction has historically been oppressed, including a long history of forced sterilizations and coercion around contraceptive use.

The tenates of reproductive justice also include the right to parent a child in a safe and healthy environment. Having minimal green space, dilapidated infrastructure, and exposure to environmental toxins in residential areas violates that right.

✨️Reproductive justice maintains that safe, healthy, and thriving communities are essential to parenting. If we can provide such communities, everyone thrives, including pregnant people✨️

How have you incorporated reproductive justice into your work?
