This October 10-16th is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) awareness week! Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic condition where obsessions can lead to compulsive behaviors, and it affects more than 3 million adults in the United States. “Obsessive” refers to frequent, often distressing thoughts that are out of your control. Meanwhile, “compulsive” means you feel an urge to repeat something over and over to minimize the distress caused by the obsession. It can be hard to control these impulses.

You may have heard of OCD in conversation or in the media, where it’s often misrepresented as an overly organized person who can’t stop washing their hands. While this might be partly accurate for some people with OCD, it’s far from the complete picture. This use of “OCD” is not only limited, but also adds to stigma and misunderstanding for people who live with OCD.

Living with OCD isn’t always easy. But the good news is, OCD can be treated. Many people with OCD manage their condition and live happy, full lives. For more information on OCD visit https://mhanational.org/conditions/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd

Everyone has mental health; however, 1 in 10 people worldwide live with a mental health condition. Despite the universal nature, the gap between demand for mental health services and supply remains substantial. Relatively few people around the world have access to quality mental health services.
World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world, mobilize efforts in support of mental health, and a chance to empower people to look after their own mental health and provide support to others.
Want to take action this World Mental Health Day? Consider taking the National Council for Mental Wellbeing’s public pledge to help communities and individuals stay healthy. By signing this pledge you will discover new ways to advocate for mental health and substance issues in your community, stay informed about the latest mental health resources, and much more.
Take the pledge today at https://bit.ly/2Yt11J5

Today is national depression screening day. Major depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 16 million of American adults each year and only about a third of those suffering from severe depression seek treatment from a mental health professional. If you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or unable to do the things you once enjoyed, it may be time to assess your emotional health. If you are concerned about yourself or someone you love, take a few minutes to complete an anonymous self-assessment.
Online screening tools are meant to be a quick snapshot of your mental health. Following screening, you will be provided with information, resources and tools to help you understand and improve your mental health. If your results indicate you may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness, consider sharing your results with someone. A mental health provider (such as a doctor or a therapist) can give you a full assessment and talk to you about options for how to feel better.

If you are in need of immediate assistance, please call the National Su***de Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK, or text “MHA” to 741-741 to talk to a trained counselor from the Crisis Text Line.
