🎶MEET BYRON🎶
Byron has Alzheimer’s Disease and has been receiving music therapy services through MTSTL for 2 years now. His music therapist, Destiny, works with him to maintain his current cognitive, physical, social, and communicative abilities through various interventions. Since Alzheimer’s is a degenerative disease, Destiny focuses the sessions around goals including:
✨ elevating mood
✨ increasing verbalization
✨ increasing focus
AND
✨ cognitive stimulation through memory recall
A quote from the music therapist -
“The songs I do at the beginning and end of session are always the same. I do this to keep consistency and to assist in memory recall of song structures and lyrics. These are also interventions to assist in socialization - greeting each other and transitioning to the end of session. This would be the one thing consistently do to see potential progress from session to session.
I use preferred, recorded music for cognitive stimulation (recognizing songs, remembering next songs coming up on album, recalling structure of songs for drumming, often engaging reminiscing).
Additionally, I provide live preferred music to engage focus by changing tempos, using musical cues, etc. Using live music that we both know and can connect with increases Byron’s socialization through eye contact and singing together.”
We are honored to serve individuals like Byron through music. If you think you or someone you know would benefit from music therapy, follow the link in our bio to inquire about music therapy services!
