“Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion.” — W. Edwards Deming

Data are essential in any service system, but especially in environments where individuals may experience significant behavioral challenges. Objective measurement helps teams understand what is actually happening rather than relying on assumptions or anecdotal impressions.

In adult services, data provide clarity. They guide decision-making, strengthen supervision, and allow teams to evaluate whether interventions are truly improving outcomes.

Strong data systems also support staff by making expectations clear and feedback constructive rather than subjective.

Much of my training work focuses on helping organizations build practical, sustainable data systems that staff can use effectively.

The Assessment of Adult Core Competencies (ACCEA) curriculum was developed to help clinicians and organizations better support adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities who present with significant behavioral challenges.

The framework provides structured assessment tools and intervention strategies designed to increase autonomy and improve quality of life across multiple domains.

Rather than focusing solely on crisis management, ACCEA emphasizes identifying meaningful skill development priorities and building systems that support long-term progress.

For professionals working in adult services, these tools can help create clearer assessment processes and more effective intervention planning.

April 7 marks World Health Day, which highlights the importance of strengthening health systems across the globe.

When we think about health, it’s important to include behavioral health and quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Effective systems must integrate medical care, behavioral science, and supportive environments that promote autonomy and wellbeing.

In adult service settings, interdisciplinary collaboration—among clinicians, nurses, behavioral specialists, and direct support staff—is essential. When those systems function well, individuals experience safer environments, stronger skill development, and better long-term outcomes.

Effective staff training is one of the most important—and often overlooked—factors in successful adult service programs.

Direct support professionals operate on the front lines of care. Their training, supervision, and support systems determine whether interventions are implemented consistently and effectively.

Organizational behavior management provides a framework for building training systems that include clear expectations, performance feedback, and reinforcement for effective practice.

When staff training systems are strong, both staff and the individuals they support benefit.

“Science is first of all a set of attitudes.” — B.F. Skinner

This idea has guided my work for decades. Applied behavior analysis is not simply a set of procedures—it’s a mindset grounded in curiosity, observation, and a willingness to follow the data.

A scientific attitude requires humility. It means being willing to revise our assumptions when evidence suggests a better path forward. In adult service settings, that mindset helps teams move beyond tradition or habit and toward practices that truly improve outcomes.

When we approach complex behavioral challenges with scientific attitudes, we create opportunities for meaningful progress.

April is National Autism Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of evidence-based services, community inclusion, and respectful support for autistic individuals across the lifespan.

Much of my work has focused on adults with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities who have complex behavioral health needs. These individuals often face barriers to autonomy and community inclusion, yet decades of behavioral science show that meaningful skill development and improved quality of life are possible when support systems are thoughtfully designed.

Awareness is important—but effective systems, trained staff, and evidence-based practices are what truly change lives.

March is shaping up to be a month focused on leadership, professionalism, and system-building.

Whether through conferences, webinars, or consultation, my goal remains the same: to support organizations in creating evidence-based systems that protect both staff and the adults they serve.

“Science is first of all a set of attitudes.” — B.F. Skinner

This quote has stayed with me throughout my career. Applied behavior analysis isn’t just a collection of techniques—it’s a way of approaching problems with curiosity, humility, and a commitment to evidence. The attitude we bring to our work matters just as much as the procedures we use.

A scientific attitude means being willing to question our assumptions, to change course when data suggest we should, and to prioritize outcomes that genuinely improve quality of life. In adult service settings, where complexity and risk are often high, this mindset is essential. It keeps our work grounded, ethical, and responsive to the people we serve.

Leadership in adult services requires balancing compassion with accountability.
