Do I have a leaky gut?!? 🙋🏻
If you have gut issues and like to poke around the internet 🌐 to find out what in the world might be going on you have probably come across the term “Leaky Gut” . A lot of my clients either tell me they think they have leaky gut or ask me about it so I wanted to address it in a newsletter.
First of all, what is leaky gut? ❓
Leaky gut, also known as intestinal permeability is when the tight junctions of your colon and small intestine are damaged and create spaces for undigested food particles to escape into your blood stream causing reactions such as fatigue 🥱, skin conditions, and digestive issues 💩.
Why does this happen?
So many reasons! The top one being our Standard American Diet (SAD) which includes sugar🧁, processed foods, and pesticides (on our non-organic produce 🍅🥒🥕). It can also be caused by low stomach acid, chronic stress 😟, overuse of antibiotics💊, and infections.
So, how do I know if I have leaky gut and how do I heal it?
While there is specific testing for leaky gut, its accuracy is dubious. I would recommend working with a health coach 👩🏻⚕️, functional medicine doctor, or nutritionist to take a deeper look at your symptoms, perhaps do a short-term elimination diet and determine what the next best steps are.
Inflammatory foods like sugar, processed foods, gluten, dairy, and pesticides are often eliminated for a period of time to heal a leaky gut and good bugs such as probiotics, prebiotics, and a fiber rich diet along with stress management and an exercise routine 🏃🏻♀️are incorporated to improve leaky gut. When necessary some supplements 💊 might be added in as well and other underlying issues such as dysbiosis and low stomach acid might need to be addressed.
Chances are if you are having long-term gut issues you may have some form of leaky gut and you most probably have dysbiosis (too many bad gut bacteria).
