Do I have a leaky gut?!? 🙋🏻

If you have gut issues and like to poke around the internet 🌐 to find out what in the world might be going on you have probably come across the term “Leaky Gut” . A lot of my clients either tell me they think they have leaky gut or ask me about it so I wanted to address it in a newsletter.

First of all, what is leaky gut? ❓

Leaky gut, also known as intestinal permeability is when the tight junctions of your colon and small intestine are damaged and create spaces for undigested food particles to escape into your blood stream causing reactions such as fatigue 🥱, skin conditions, and digestive issues 💩.

Why does this happen?

So many reasons! The top one being our Standard American Diet (SAD) which includes sugar🧁, processed foods, and pesticides (on our non-organic produce 🍅🥒🥕). It can also be caused by low stomach acid, chronic stress 😟, overuse of antibiotics💊, and infections.

So, how do I know if I have leaky gut and how do I heal it?

While there is specific testing for leaky gut, its accuracy is dubious. I would recommend working with a health coach 👩🏻‍⚕️, functional medicine doctor, or nutritionist to take a deeper look at your symptoms, perhaps do a short-term elimination diet and determine what the next best steps are.

Inflammatory foods like sugar, processed foods, gluten, dairy, and pesticides are often eliminated for a period of time to heal a leaky gut and good bugs such as probiotics, prebiotics, and a fiber rich diet along with stress management and an exercise routine 🏃🏻‍♀️are incorporated to improve leaky gut. When necessary some supplements 💊 might be added in as well and other underlying issues such as dysbiosis and low stomach acid might need to be addressed.

Chances are if you are having long-term gut issues you may have some form of leaky gut and you most probably have dysbiosis (too many bad gut bacteria).

If you think you might have leaky gut and want help to heal, DM me or schedule a time to talk (Link in Bio 🔗).

Do this every morning to help you go 🚽💩

This is my number one favorite and easy exercise to incorporate into my day to help stimulate my digestive system and increase gut motility i.e. help you go #2.

This simple exercise helps reeducate your bowels and reduces bloating, gut pain, and constipation. I also do this if I'm already feeling constipated and it truly helps get things moving.

Here are the simple steps.

1) I-- begin on the right side of your lower abdomen and chose your fingers to take long strokes upwards to make the letter I. Repeat this a few times.

2) Luv- next move up to the top of the I right underneath the rib cage and make the shape of an upside down L so that you follow your gut downwards towards the re**um.

3) U- put it all together and feel free to spend extra time in a place that feels more tender. This is probably where you have a pocket of excess gas or stool that you can help move along.

HOW TO "USE" A COACH SO THAT YOU GET RESULTS

It's common that I work with people who have never been coached before. And not too long ago, a client asked me, "How do I use you as my coach to the fullest? I'm not sure I know how to work with a coach."

The question is so valid. Here's what I recommend on how to best work with a coach:

Make sure that you have the time and motivation to dedicate to your healing journey--a coach can only get you halfway there but you still have to put in the work.

Second, keep a notebook of questions and progress or roadblocks in between each session so that you are prepared to get the most out of each session.

Finally, know that your coach is there to serve you so be open minded and ready to learn and grow like you've never grown before.

Save this post for the next time you're thinking of working with a coach.

Double tap ❤️ if you ever experience decision fatigue when it comes to cooking meals 🍜

If I don’t know what I’m going to cook that night and don’t have the ingredients on hand I can end up getting overwhelmed and might end up ordering out or worse just snacking because I’m too hungry to wait for food!

Meal planning and healthy meal boxes are my go to when combatting decision fatigue when it comes to making a meal. I often rotate through a variation of the same 5-7 meals each week: soup, stir fry, fish, tofu, pasta (lots of gluten free varieties) and salad are some of my go to meal prep dishes.

Do you have decision fatigue when it comes to meal planning?

What do you do to help you keep up your home cooking and healthy habits?

Raise your hand 🙋🏻if you've been hearing the term SIBO a lot lately?

In the last two years, there has been so much more research and information out there on something called SIBO, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. That's great, but you might find yourself asking what is it and do I have it? 😕

Generally our small intestines are clear of bacteria, but when triggered (i.e. motility issues, antibiotic use, abdominal surgery) you can get food stuck in the small intestine, which can produce bacteria and cause a whole array of issues.

SO how do I know if I have SIBO? Well first check your symptoms. Do you have bloating after meals or feel super full? Do you have constipation or diarhea? Do you often have gut pain?

You might have SIBO but the only way to know is by testing. You can either ask your GI doctor for a test or order one online. DM me to find out how.

Why is this important? Treating SIBO requires a slightly different process than treating generalized constipation and you may need medical intervention such as antibiotics for a short time.

Regardless you will need to understand what caused your SIBO in the first place. The easiest way to do this is to work with a health coach who can help you determine what caused your SIBO and provide you with the fastest way to recovery without a relapse.
