Mindfulness in Education A Duke/UNC-Chapel Hill collaborative research study on the effects of yoga and mindfulness in K-12 e (CIS), and Y.O.G.A for Youth NC.

This project brings together an interdisciplinary team of Duke and UNC-CH faculty and students with local organizations and schools for a multi-year research study. We are housed under the Bass Connections program at Duke: https://bassconnections.duke.edu/

We aim to analyze the effects of regular yoga and meditation practice on middle school students’ physical, emotional, and social health outcomes through both qualitative and quantitative measures. We have two community-partners in our research- Communities in Schools of Orange County, Inc. CIS is a non-profit that provides afterschool programming in all seven middle schools and the alternative high schools in Orange County, NC, which aims to “surround students with a community of support, empower them to stay in school and achieve in life.” Y.O.G.A for Youth is one of the oldest non-profit youth yoga organizations in the United States, which seeks to provide underserved youth with tools of self discovery that foster hope, discipline and respect for self, others and community.

Hello everyone! Our team has been busy this summer analyzing data from our research. We are now back to a full schedule and are excited about continuing with this important work. The majority of our research is related to middle-school-aged students but here's a great article that shows the value of yoga at any age.

Another study adds to the body of research showing how yoga is a boon for the aging mind as well as the body.

Achievement is considered a higher priority than caring for others, according to kids surveyed. But having a school and family culture that values kindness can reap bigger rewards.
