A common question we get is whether heel pain stays just in the heel, or if it can also affect the arch.
And the answer is yes, it can absolutely extend into the arch.
A lot of runners experience arch pain because of the biomechanics of running. When you run, you’re putting repeated stress on the plantar fascia, which stretches from the heel into the arch. Over time, that strain can cause pain in both areas.
Dr. Justin specializes in sports medicine. When someone comes in with plantar fasciitis, heel pain, or arch pain, what’s usually your initial approach?
The most important thing is a proper evaluation. I don’t want patients to stop being active if they don’t have to, because that can really affect their quality of life.
We start by addressing the acute phase, focusing on inflammation and pain control. Once that’s under control, we move into long term treatment options like stretching exercises and orthotics.
There are other treatments available, such as physical therapy or surgery, but those are not where we start. We always take a conservative approach first to help patients recover and return to their normal activities as quickly and safely as possible.
