Friendly reminder for whoever needs to hear it today: it’s very normal not to “enjoy every minute.” While so many well-meaning friends, family members (and often strangers) will tell parents to “enjoy every minute because time goes by so fast,” please remember that some minutes and hours and days and weeks are HARD. And exhausting. And make you doubt your strength as a parent.

There will be so many good minutes and memories. In the tough phases, reach out for help. Doing so will allow you make room to appreciate the really amazing moments. ❤️

If you are a birth or postpartum professional interested in continuing your anti-racist work, I cannot say enough about this workshop with Jen Sarduy of . What can postpartum anxiety and depression look like?

Refusing to shower or sleep when there isn’t someone else in the house because you think someone is going to come in and take your baby.

Hiding behind the drapes in the nursery with your baby when someone knocks on the front door and calling the police because you think they are trying to break in to your home.

Dropping to below your pre-pregnancy weight by three weeks postpartum; having absolutely no appetite even when delicious meals are dropped off by loving friends and family.

A complete inability to sleep even when completely exhausted with a heart that never stops racing.

“Pulling it together” for the constant stream of visitors and gritting your teeth through them holding your baby only to burst into tears the second they leave.

Asking your mom if your baby is going to be ok. Every five minutes. For weeks.

Posing for precious newborn photos and feeling like a horrible mom because you don’t feel bonded with your child and are completely preoccupied with the plugged duct you can feel forming in your breast at that exact moment.

This was my experience with PPA and PPD. This is what is looked like for me, and my experience and recovery fuels my passion for supporting new parents.

A perinatal mood disorder may look different for you or someone you love, but “you are not alone. You are not to blame. With help, you will be well.” - Postpartum Support International
