Shoulder Surgery Recovery Timeline

Recovery from most shoulder surgeries usually takes several months. The recovery timeline for each patient is different. The following is a breakdown of the typical recovery timeline for rotator cuff surgery:

Day of surgery: Your rotator cuff surgery is done in an outpatient setting while you are sleeping (under general anesthesia). The surgery takes a few hours.

Week 1: In the first week after surgery, you will usually experience swelling and pain in your shoulder. To help relieve the pain, you need to apply ice to your shoulder intermittently, elevate your arm, and take the pain medications as prescribed.

Week 2: Your bandages will probably be removed within two weeks after surgery. During this time, you may begin your physical therapy. Your surgeon may continue to recommend medicine for pain relief.

Week 4: After about a month, you may no longer need the sling you were using to support your arm. Your doctor will tell you when you don’t need to use it anymore. You may be able to drive again at about this time.

Week 6: Although you may be able to resume some daily activities, your shoulder will probably need more time to increase its strength and range of motion. You must avoid heavy lifting or activities that require the movement of your arm. Your therapist will give you guidance on what your limitations are.

Week 8: You will most likely begin active motion exercises two months after your surgery.

Week 9 and beyond: You should continue to improve your shoulder and affected arm's range of motion. Some people will continue to experience pain. The pain should continue to lessen. If you are having problems with pain, you should discuss it with your healthcare provider.
While these guidelines can be helpful, your progress and outcome may be slower or faster than indicated. Therefore, you should discuss your situation with your surgeon or PT.

60–70% of rotator cuff patients gain 10–15 pounds during recovery — and it’s not laziness.

After surgery:
• Activity drops 30–40%
• Daily burn drops from ~2,400 → ~1,700 calories

Eat the same? That’s 1 pound per week. Over 12 weeks → 12 pounds. 😬

The culprit: your body’s hunger signals don’t adjust to sudden inactivity.
