As many of you are probably aware, there have been reported and confirmed cases of EHV-1/EHM (neurologic) in Texas and Oklahoma that were confirmed as all having attended a barrel racing competition in Waco, Texas. Additional cases have been reported in Canada as well as Maryland, at least one of these cases has been confirmed as neurologic (EHM) but these cases have not been linked to the barrel racing event.

Did you know that approximately 60% of performance/show horses are afflicted with gastric ulcers, with non-performance horses and foals being impacted as well?

Ulcers can develop for many reasons related to diet, housing, training, and more. Some equine management factors that can contribute to ulcers include:

โ€ขStall confinement
โ€ขStrenuous exercise
โ€ขLimiting feedings to two times per day
โ€ขFeeding diets high in grains
โ€ขStress (both environmental and physical)
โ€ขNo direct contact to other horses
โ€ขTraining and recreational showing
โ€ขHauling and mixing groups of horses

โค๏ธโ€๐ŸฉนTo help raise awareness about gastric ulcers in horses, we are providing gastroscopy of the stomach at 50% off AND 2 FREE tubes of Ulcergard with each scoping!๐ŸŽ‰ (*while supplies last)

โญ๏ธUlcergard is not only an effective Treatment for ulcers but can also be used as a Preventative when your horse is under added stress while traveling, changing barns/environments, etc

If you have concerns about ulcers and your horse, call or email today to book your horseโ€™s appointment as sign ups for this program ends April 30th!

Dental care is an important part of your horse's routine annual healthcare needs. One very common dental issue we see on nearly every dental patient is sharp points. These sharp points develop (see first photo) as your horse chews because the outside of the upper teeth and the inside of the lower teeth do not overlap so they donโ€™t naturally wear down.
If our horses have sharp points it can make chewing uncomfortable (think of biting your cheek every time you chew - ouch!) and those points can make wearing a halter or working in the bridle uncomfortable as the halter and bridle press the cheek against those sharp points. As the sharp points grow they can begin to cause ulceration of the cheek and the tongue. (see second photo)

This seemingly small issue can translate into health and behavioral problems. Annual dental care can help you keep sharp points in check before they become a problem!

To help make regular dental care more affordable, our half-price December Dental program provides your horseโ€™s oral exam and power float at 50% off when there are 2 or more horses at one appointment (including ranch calls) or one or more if you haul in to our sister clinic, Loomis Basin Equine in Penryn.

These appointments are already filling up very quickly and booking out into 2024, so call or email today for your appointment time!

Itโ€™s the one youโ€™ve been waiting for...
For 15 years our equine medical group has been providing our half-price December Dental Program to help make it easier for horse owners to afford to maintain their horses' dental health!

Just like us, horses of all ages need regular dental care to keep them feeling their best. Younger horses need to be checked to make sure their teeth are coming in correctly, adult horses need to have regular floats to keep sharp points and other oral issues at bay, and aged horses often need help as their teeth begin to lose function or become loose.

This program provides your horseโ€™s oral exam and power float at 50% off when you have 2 or more horses at one appointment (including ranch calls) or one or more if you haul in to Loomis Basin in Penryn.
These appointments fill up very quickly so call or email today for your appointment time!

When the weather changes rapidly it can cause a multitude of health concerns with our horses. We want to address just a couple things that we are seeing more often right now due to the rapid changes in weather:

โ€ข Colic - Horses often donโ€™t adjust as quickly to rapid changes in temperature as they need to. If the temperature suddenly plummets they sometimes are less apt to drink as much water as their body requires, which can lead to impactions and dehydration. Offering your horse a soupy mash, warmed water, and/or adding a little extra salt in their feed can often help keep colic at bay!

โ€ขHoof Abscesses - When the weather switches from wet to dry, wet to dry, wet to dry our horses hooves are more prone to hoof abscesses. Dry hooves soak up dirty water, manure, and urine all contaminated with lots of bacteria. Any openings in the hoof (no matter how tiny) from a crack or bruise or a little puncture from stepping on a rock can allow that nasty bacteria to come in and create a hoof abscess. Cleaning your horseโ€™s hooves regularly and providing a clean dry area for them can greatly decrease the chances of developing hoof abscesses.

If you have any concerns about your horseโ€™s health during these changes in weather we are here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! 916-652-7645 or info@lbemc.com
