🐍2025: Chapter 6🐍

Welcome to the heart of the Summer. ❤️‍🔥

I’ve been on break from school and we’ve been spending our days exploring Disney, crafting at the library, tending to an experimental garden, reading tarot, having breakfast in bed, and caring for our home as a sacred space.

All while feeling like the world is burning down around us.

Every time I sit to reflect, all I can see is the dichotomy of life.
Joy within heartbreak.
Clarity within pain.
Humor within anger.
I’ve written this same thing in many posts before and forgotten and it’s showing up again for me and this reminder is my July gift to you. 🤍

☀️HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA🧘🏻‍♀️

I first found yoga in 2012 as I was recovering from a violent relationship that landed me in the hospital with a back injury.
I never went to physical therapy and immediately dove back into weightlifting and running leaving me with excruciating sciatic nerve pain and an injury to my foot.
All of this unfortunately happened at a time where I had just moved back to Tallahassee with no vehicle and had to walk/ride the bus to get to class so I needed to get out of pain fast.
I think I looked up some basic sciatic nerve stretches on YouTube like pigeon and felt immediate relief.

As I write this I look back and laugh because after all of the years I’ve spent working with this practice, a few stretches on you tube hardly seems like yoga 😂 but it’s a reminder we all have our own doors to enter this practice.

Reflecting over the past 10 years, all the limbs of yoga, have held me like a grandmother tree, connecting me to the earth and allowing me to sway in the wind.

Yoga has supported me through DV recovery, chronic pain, loss, pregnancy, life transitions, heartbreak, fear of the unknown and has also given me relief, joy, love, community, abundance, a connection to God and so so so much more.

I truly could go on and on about the personal and evidence based benefits to adopting a yoga practice but I need like a 2 week break from supporting everything i say with PubMed IDs 😂

A week from today, we’re gathering at to celebrate Summer, practice together, and deepen our yoga community. 🙏🏼

Tickets are $20 and include a beverage (NA options available) get yours by sending me a DM or just show up with cash/card and we can do it before class on Sunday!

I’d also love to hear about your introduction to yoga in the comments! 👇🏻

Happy last day of Spring quarter to all of my cohorts. 🥳 I hope you get all of the fun in the sun you need to recharge over the next 2 weeks. 🙏🏼

I’m wrapping up Immune Imbalances and Inflammation + Oxidative Reductive Dynamics and Energy Production this quarter and have truly enjoyed being able to make so many connections between the two and understand on a deeper level how inflammation and oxidative stress express as symptoms.

This is one of the aspects that originally drew me to study functional medicine, understanding the importance of the bodies inter connectivity and what that means for our long term health.

Once again, both classes point us back to the gut as our starting point of root cause care and there are so many holistic ways we can improve our health in this area that are free such as meditation and sun exposure, as well as targeted personalized nutritional interventions using testing, diet, and supplements.

There really are so many paths to healing and feeling like our whole true self and functional medicine recognizes this. 🤍

🐍2025 Chapter 5🐍
(Half way through Chapter 6 since I’ve been on a social media break)

It’s funny that I’ve been putting these snakes on these posts all year but I had no idea how much shedding I would be doing. Everyone always say shedding feels good like taking off clothes that are too tight but for me it has been incredibly painful like someone ripping off peeling sunburn before it’s ready. 🥵

Did you know that the year your animal match’s with the Chinese zodiac year it’s called your “enemy year” or year of conflict?

Anyone else year of the snake? How are we feeling almost half way through?

🗂️SAVE this post to your meal inspo folder🗂️

It’s no secret that food + lifestyle are the simplest + most inexpensive way to reduce symptoms of DISease + promote optimal health. 👩🏻‍🔬

As a mother, helping my kids develop a relationship to nature through food is a priority for me.

As a woman, using food to support my unique hormonal needs is a priority for me.

As a consumer, using my dollars to choose real, whole food over processed food like man made products is a priority for me.

All of that to say, we all have different unique needs when it comes to the meals we choose for ourselves + our families AND it evolves over time so what may be nourishing for me in this moment, may not feel right for you. Take what you need and leave the rest. 🫶🏻

🍲FIRST, on my pre grocery shopping day I make an everything but the kitchen sink soup/stew to use the last of our herbs and veggies. This week it was split pea and lentil with carrots and celery and cilantro. (Save and freeze your veggie and meat scraps to make your own broth as a less waste option to buying premade broth.)

🍳 Breakfast this week: Coconut chia bowl, sweet potato and Brussels sprout hash with eggs, and mixed berry smoothie.

🥗Lunch this week: copycat broccoli yum yum salad with teriyaki tempeh, chicken Mediterranean bowls, and chick pea Cesar salad.

🫒 Snacks: hummus and veggies, apples and almond butter, crackers and avocado, dark chocolate and peanut butter bites.

🍜Dinners: lemon honey butter chicken with beets and rice, turkey and red bean chili, and tempeh rainbos stir fry.

What’s on your meal inspo list this week? Any of these you plan to make? Looking for more gut restoration and support? Check out my bio and download my new eBook! 💛🌻🍯

A simple way we can break down the body and analyze many symptoms at once to address the root cause of disease is through organizing them in various “nodes”:
✨Assimilation ( This is where we find digestive, absorptive, and microbiological
imbalances such as IBS.)
✨Defense & Repair (This is where we find Immune and inflammatory imbalance such as chronic joint paint.)
✨Energy (This is where we find oxidation-reduction imbalances and
mitochondropathy such as headaches and fatigue.)
✨Biotransformation and Elimination (This is where we find detoxification imbalances such as acne.)
✨Communication (This is where we find hormonal and neurotransmitter imbalances such as abnormal periods.)
✨Transport (This is where we find circulatory and cardiometabolic imbalances such as anemia.)
✨Structural integrity (This is where we find imbalances from cellular membrane
function to the musculoskeletal system.)
*Once remembering that there is a lot of overlap, fatigue can be organized into multiple nodes- energy, communication, and transportation.

Say we feel healthy and want to maintain our vitality, we can look at these nodes and see how to do that through multiple ways!
For example, to maintain healthy bones we need:
✨ Adequate micronutrients (assimilation)
✨ Acid/alkaline balance (biotransformation and elimination)
✨ Load bearing exercise (structural integrity)
✨ Balanced hormones (communication)

If you’ve made it through, thanks for coming to another one of my nerding out about FM TedTalks! My favorite part of grad school so far has been learning how to sift through histories and symptoms and break everything down into the smallest biochemical piece possible, then work to rebuild in a way that supports health. 🤓 (Which is extremely ironic because in undergrad I left the premedical sciences major because I couldn’t understand chemistry. 😂)
