K2 is a little known vitamin that is probably one of the most important for health. While it is found naturally in the most “unhealthy” foods that are supposed to be clogging our hearts, it may be the one nutrient we need to keep our arteries clear. That is because vitamin k2 activates proteins that shuffle calcium into our bones and teeth. In its absence calcium can build up in the tissues of the body like our arteries. It can also impact many other systems in our bodies and influence our mental health. Calcium can even stiffen our cells making the making the utilizations of nutrients and hormones more difficult.
We can see this calcium imbalance with HTMA testing. It often presents as very high levels known as a “calcium shell”. This can lead to all kinds of symptoms like arthritis, atherosclerosis, osteoporosis, dental decay, fatigue, depression, sleep problems, and even feelings of disconnection from reality. We see slowed thyroid function with elevated calcium and it may impair our bodies sensitivity to insulin leading to poorly regulated blood sugar. Our cellular health is the health of our entire body. While there are several causes for elevated calcium, a deficiency of Vitamin K2 is a huge culprit.
We have demonized fat, especially saturated fat in the pursuit of healthier hearts. We may have perpetuated the problem we were trying to alleviate even further by removing these foods from our diets, and instead replacing them with inflammatory oils. Our ancestors ate an abundance of this vitamin and had virtually none of the disease we have today. Whole foods from the Earth will always be better for you than highly processed ones, no matter the calorie count.
