Taking block play to the next level 🔦

Block play doesn’t always have to look the same!
Adding the components of light and shadow allows for further exploration and engagement.

We used light tables, a projector, flash lights and translucent colorful blocks for this fun activity.
Additionally, we covered the wall in paper and provided writing utensils if the children wanted to trace their creation’s shadow.

So much fun!

It may be sweater weather outside, but that didn’t stop us from bringing all the cozy classroom fun inside at Seminole Heights United Methodist Preschool! Since chilly mornings and cocoa-filled afternoons aren’t always guaranteed around here, Ms. Paige helped bring the warmth inside with a little creativity and a lot of imagination. Students got busy designing their own hot chocolate–inspired artwork, singing favorite songs together, and settling in for story time that had everyone smiling and engaged. Our 3-year-old class read This Is Not My Hat, the Older 2s cozied up with Hot Cocoa Calm, and the Young 2s had a dino-mite time reading 5 Little Dinosaurs. From artistic cups of cocoa to joyful voices filling the room, it was a heart-warming day full of creativity, connection, and cozy moments.

This February, we are diving into stories that celebrate joy, brilliance, and the incredible legacy of Black history. Reading together is one of the most powerful ways to help preschoolers see themselves and their friends in a world full of possibility. We’ve curated a list of books covering everything from self-love to STEM pioneers for each week in February!

Week 1: Identity & Self-Love (Sulwe, I Am Every Good Thing, Hair Love, The Day You Begin, Cool Cuts)

Week 2: Pioneers & History-Makers (The ABCs of Black History, Little Legends, Little Leaders, Hidden Figures, A Is for All the Things You Are)

Week 3: Arts, Music & Creativity (Trombone Shorty, Firebird, Radiant Child, The Roots of Rap, Parker Looks Up)

Week 4: Community, Family & Joy (Thank You, Omu!, The Undefeated, Granddaddy’s Turn, Last Stop on Market Street, All Because You Matter)

It might be 75 degrees one day and 40 the next, but we aren’t letting the Florida "winter" pass us by without some frosty fun! Since the chances of a real snowflake landing in our backyard are slim to none, we decided to bring the Arctic to the classroom! Our little explorers have been busy diving hands-first into our "snow" sensory bins to help our killer whales, polar bears and penguins find their way through the drifts and creating their own unique snowflakes using white crayons on black paper—because even if it doesn’t snow outside, it’s definitely "snowing" in the art center! We’re staying cozy, embracing the cold front, and proving that you don't need a blizzard to have a flurry of fun. Stay warm out there, everyone!

Preschoolers can be architects too! The VPK class at Hillsborough Baptist School has been exploring community helpers and recently became especially curious about the people who build our world. After reading Iggy Peck, Architect with Ms. Rachel, the children were inspired to step into the role of architects themselves! Using craft wire and styrofoam blocks, they designed and built their own creative structures. The flexible craft wire was perfect for strengthening fine motor skills and letting the children experiment with real 3D construction. This type of hands-on “tinkering” activity is also known to boost focus, problem-solving, and concentration. What new building materials could YOU introduce in your classroom to spark creativity and exploration?

Johnson’s All Care Child Care Center stresses the importance of quality learning centers throughout their school. Learning centers provide hands-on opportunities for children to explore, create, and discover through play. Each center is intentionally designed to support growth in language, problem-solving, creativity, and social skills while encouraging independence and play.

Pathways coach Brittnye Johnson supports Johnson’s All Care Child Care Center by teaching strategies that promote independence and play through learning centers, while also equipping the school with the tools needed to create these enriching environments.

Painting our feelings this morning 🌈

We read the book, Im Afraid Said the Leaf and talked about all of the different feelings in the book.
Then we painted how we were feeling or how characters felt in the book.

We had so much fun!
