🚨 PSA: Watch out for Empathy Scammers! 🚨
Have you heard of an Empathy Scam? These scammers don't just hack accounts; they "hack" your heart. They target people in Facebook groups, community pages, and dating apps, looking for kind souls to exploit.
❓ What is an Empathy Scam?
Instead of a cold sales pitch, these scammers use a sob story. They spend weeks building a deep emotional connection with you. They might pretend to be:
A struggling parent who can't afford a "life-saving" procedure.
A victim of a sudden disaster or "toxic" situation.
Someone whose bank account is "frozen" while they are in an emergency.
🚩 Red Flags to Watch For:
The "Love Bomb": They move the relationship fast, calling you their "angel" or "hero" almost immediately.
The "Off-Platform" Push: They quickly try to move you from the group/app to WhatsApp or Telegram.
The Financial "Crisis": Once you're emotionally invested, they ask for help via wire transfer, gift cards, or crypto (which are untraceable).
💡 How to Give Safely:
If you are moved by a cause and are willing to donate, never send money directly to an individual you haven't met. Only donate to known, registered organizations in your country. * Use official websites (e.g., Red Cross, local Food Banks, or registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits).
Verify a charity's legitimacy through sites like Charity Navigator, GuideStar, or your government’s official charity register.
The Golden Rule: If someone you’ve never met in person asks for money—no matter how heartbreaking their story is—it is a scam.
Stay safe, stay vigilant, and protect your heart (and your wallet)! 🛡️❤️
