Down to Earth has been inspired to make more people aware of the importance to compost their kitchen and yard waste. I am determined and convinced that when everybody jumps on the compost train, not only will our landfills dramatically reduce in size. Our soil all across the country will be restored to a healthy state suitable for more local backyard food production!

This was made for the Recycled Art Festival at Monte De Oro Winery. It's design allows you the luxury of only watering twice over the herbs entire life span. The box was made from old boat seats, screws and homemade compost. This goes to prove that you can make your mother or your other something adorable and practical for cheap! The Lassley's have begun harvesting their lettuce. Put this in perspective for your husband or wife. There are 14 heads of lettuce in the Lassley's garden. They used less than half of the $1.89 certified organic heirloom lettuce packet. So far our total is $0.95. It cost $1.20 in water for the entire life span of the 14 lettuce plants. Now our grand total is $2.15 for the 14 lettuce heads. In the market it will cost you $1.00 per non-organic lettuce head, and about double that for an organic lettuce head. When you harvest yourself, you don't chop the whole head of lettuce off like they do in large scale farming. You pick leaf by leaf. So really 14 heads of lettuce end up being around 28 heads of lettuce. So how much are you saving? Just about $20 a month on lettuce. Don't get me started about carrots...
