GUESS WHO'S BACK.... IN THE OFFICE!

Really tough guess, I know... but... it's me! I'm officially back from maternity leave.

If you're already a patient of mine, you should have received an email (check it). If you've been waiting to establish with me, now you can!

You can request an appointment through my website or by calling 480-970-0000 and selecting option 2.

Happy Monday, Everyone!

We interrupt this maternity leave for some important messaging during Breastfeeding Awareness Month!

August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, so let's be really clear about one thing:

A 𝗙𝗘𝗗 baby is best, regardless of how you get there!

Yes, breastfeeding has some awesome perks. Reduced risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis for mom, better GI and immune function for baby - just to name a few.

But you know what else has perks? Healthy, emotionally present parents and full bellied babies.

Not all women have the opportunity or ability to breastfeed. Mom may need to return to work, preserve her sanity (BFing can be HARD), or might struggle with her supply.

Even more? Not all families look the same! Same s*x couples and single fathers have to feed their babies, too.

The truth is, formula feeding can provide families and parents with options, flexibility, and security for their children. What more could you ask for?

I'm 8 weeks into my breastfeeding journey, and while it's the right choice for me, it isn't the right choice for everyone.

So, while we celebrate how awesome b***s can be during this Breastfeeding Awareness Month, let's not forget that feeding looks different for everyone and...

A 𝗙𝗘𝗗 baby is best. ❤

Your thoughts are powerful (part 2)

If negative thoughts (anxiety, stress, etc) impact your physical health… is it possible, then, that positive thoughts (hope, joy, etc) also affect your health?

IT IS.

To understand this idea, consider the bodily effects of s*xual desire, excitement, or relief. As with their negative counterparts, these changes in the body are mediated by neurotransmitters and hormones, too…. just a different set of them.

Several observational studies have documented this concept - keeping a positive outlook is associated with a significant reduction in severe cardiovascular events and even improved recovery from brain injury and stroke.

(For a simple explanation of this concept, see my recent interview with The List on the health benefits of sleeping with your pet – it covers some of the hormones at play here!)

Now, we are all capable of achieving positivity, but that doesn’t mean it comes effortlessly to everyone. It’s important to remember that something “simple” is not inherently “easy.” Improving your mindset takes time, repeated effort, even professional help.

This only further highlights how imperative access to quality mental health care is for achieving and maintaining overall health. If you’re struggling, reach out to your doctor, a friend, or family member. You deserve to heal!

Your thoughts are powerful (part 1).

Mental health affects more than just the mind.

To understand this idea, consider the cascade of physical changes your body undergoes when you feel scared or nervous - elevated heart rate, increased sweating, trembling, etc.

These effects are created by neurotransmitters and hormones, released throughout the body in direct response to your thoughts and emotions. They affect nearly every system in the body, including your heart, muscles, digestive tract, and immune system. Wow.

Imagine then, the health effects in someone suffering from mental illness, whose daily emotional experience is scared, nervous, or something more. The compounded effect of these daily changes in the body can contribute to disease. 😔 Damn.

The good news is... treatment of depression and anxiety has been shown to improve heart disease (lowering risk for heart attack, stroke, etc), physical pain, immune function, and more!

Access to quality mental health care is about more than just improving emotional well-being, it's about protecting your physical health, too. If you're suffering from anxiety, depression, a mood disorder, or severe mental illness, talk to your doctor about treatment options.

FOR REAL.

I can’t possibly emphasize this enough, but your mental health matters. Our minds, and the health of our minds, have a direct effect on our physical well-being. This includes immune regulation, hormone levels, digestion, and virtually every function in the body.

Despite its remarkable importance, mental health is often dismissed, undervalued, and stigmatized.

May marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness month, so I’ll be focusing my upcoming posts on discussing exactly how and why our mental health affects so much of our overall well-being.

If your mental health is suffering, know that you’re not alone! Approximately 1 in 5 US adults experience mental illness each year... and that was BEFORE the events of 2020.

Swipe for some statistics from NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and stay tuned for more posts with additional info, tips, and resources to care for your mental health.

Take care of yourselves, Dr. C. ❤

Time for some SLEEP HACKS!

Like most good things, achieving better sleep takes some effort, especially if you’ve been struggling for an extended period of time.

Thankfully, none of these recommended sleep hacks is particularly difficult…. or even complex. That’s not to say it won’t require some work on your part, though!

Below is a list of some of the MOST USEFUL hacks to set yourself up for a restful night sleep.

𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲! Your body regulates sleep with hormones and environmental cues at timed intervals. A fluctuating bedtime disrupts the natural ebb and flow of sleep/wake hormones like melatonin.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲! Your body looks to the environment to signal that it’s time to sleep. Avoiding exposure to artificial light (you know, like your phone screen) after the sun goes down helps your body produce melatonin and initiate the sleep cycle.

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲! Listening to guided meditations or practicing a formal meditation before bed helps reduce that mental chatter that can keep you tossing and turning at night.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁! There are a variety of supportive supplements available to gently aid in restful sleep. Melatonin helps establish a set sleep schedule. Herbs like lavender, valerian, and passionflower can calm your mind and softly sedate.

Remember, supplement quality is HUGE, so talk to your naturopathic doctor for reputable and quality-controlled brands.

It's important to know that persistently difficult sleep can be a sign of a larger problem. Always discuss concerns with your doctor so you can receive an appropriate workup.

The link between poor sleep and chronic disease

Inadequate sleep has been repeatedly linked to both the development and poor management of chronic disease.

This includes things like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, but it's also been linked to asthma, depression, and even Alzheimer's disease.

Adults need about 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night, but roughly 35% of US adults report getting less than 7 hours each night.

In fact, losing just one night of good sleep can lower your s*x drive, blunt your immune function, and increases the level of beta-amyloid in the brain (a protein that leads to the development of Alzheimer's). YIKES.

So, despite society's push to overwork, over perform, and the glorification of success over well-being.... you, my friend, need to sleep. Doctor's orders!

The big time effects of journaling on your body and mind...

Yep, you read that right. Personal journaling (about your experiences, joys, stressors, traumas, etc) can have big time effects on your health, both physically AND mentally. Whaat?

There's quite a bit of observational and experimental research on this topic, and everything from reduced anxiety to improved immune function has been identified.

Here's a list of just SOME of the benefits:

▪️Reduced anxiety
▪️Improved mood
▪️Improved memory
▪️Feelings of greater well-being

If you can believe it, the effects on physical health are even more pronounced. These include:

▪️Reduced blood pressure
▪️Reduced disease severity in rheumatoid arthritis
▪️Reduced length of hospital stay
▪️Reduction in chronic pain
▪️Increased immune response in HIV
▪️Improved liver function
▪️Improved lung function in asthmatics

DAMN.

Now, there are always exceptions. For those who suffer from severe PTSD or childhood abuse, recalling past traumas can be detrimental. If you fall into one of these categories, be sure to consult your mental health practitioner about journaling and your recovery.

For the rest of you, get to it and start journaling! ✍🏼

It's very rarely either/or, black/white, this/that.

I'm alarmed (pretty much daily) at how divisive and polarized the response to this pandemic has been. Unfortunately, social media seems to be igniting the flames.

Depending on which accounts, voices, or channels you subscribe to, you're either being told to care more about others (stay at home, wear a mask, avoid crowds and gatherings) or care more about yourself (just live your life, support your immune system, "be healthy").

So, as a member of the medical community AND the wellness community, I thought it might be time for a nice reminder that...

IT CAN BE BOTH.

In fact, we desperately need it to be both.

You can:

Take care of your own health AND abide by public health measures

Enjoy your lifestyle AND make adjustments to protect yourself and others

Support your immune system AND still wear a mask

Exercise and eat well AND reduce your social activities

Refuse to live in fear AND behave like a responsible member of a community

"Do your own research" AND STILL respect and follow the advice of experts who have dedicated their lives and education to protecting public health and tackling infectious disease.

It's not either/or, black/white, this/that. This time, it's both.

Take care of yourselves but remember to take care of each other; we all need it! ❤
