Today we recognize, honor, and thank the veterans of the US Armed Forces for their service to our country.

Mental health supports and services for our veterans is essential, as many service members experience stigma for seeking mental health support though the need for support due to service related stressors (including frequent moves, deployment, separation from loved ones, and combat) and the response or outcome to such stressors (including anxiety, depression, substance use issues, PTSD, and other mental health concerns).

Resources for mental health for veterans are available through different sources including: the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Veterans Crisis Line (call 988 or text 838255), the Warrior Care Network, Cohen Veterans Network, and more. Additionally, mental heath counseling services (in-person and virtual) are benefits covered under Tricare and ChampVA insurances.

At Sapphire Cove, we offer counseling services to service members and their families, using insurance or private pay options. If you or someone you know may be seeking care, please reach out to us.

We recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities to the culture and history of the U.S.

A few members of the Hispanic and Latinx communities to celebrate include:
Dolores Huerta, a labor and women’s right activist, who along with Cesar Chavez, founded what is now the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union
Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice, and third woman to be appointed to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court
Roberto Clemente, a Hall of Fame MLB player, who did community charity work in the offseason in Puerto Rico, which was recognized when the MLB posthumously renamed the Commissioner’s award for sportsmanship and community involvement to the Roberto Clemente Award.

Within mental health, Hispanic and Latinx communities experience stigmas in seeking mental health, as well as confronting barriers when seeking help such as language barriers and lack of cultural competency of the mental health professional.

Su***de is a mental health struggle for many, through either struggles with suicidal ideations (thoughts), attempts, or being the loved one of someone who struggles with suicidal ideations or has died by su***de. In the US, recent statistics reflect one death by su***de every 11 minutes (over 49,000 people a year), while worldwide statistics reflect more than 720,000 people per year.

Struggling doesn’t have to be hidden or done on your own. Reach out to loved ones (either way), seek support through mental health care, and validate the feelings of others.
