WHAT ARE CONSIDERED RELATED CONDITIONS IN HOSPICE?
Hospice care is about a terminal prognosis, not just a single terminal diagnosis. The hospice attending physician determines the principal hospice diagnosis. Any other diagnoses, conditions, or symptoms either caused by, worsened by, or affected by the principal diagnoses are related and should be included in hospice care. Additionally, any diagnoses, conditions, or symptoms that contribute to the six month prognosis are related. And, any diagnoses, conditions, or symptoms caused by or worsened by treatment of the related conditions should be part of the hospice plan of care. Medicare says that virtually all diagnoses are related to the terminal prognosis, and exceptions are rare. (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization).
