🚨 Update: Fire in the Bayshore Area 🚨

Early this morning, a fire broke out at the former power plant located east of SH 146 and south of FM 646 in the Bayshore area. The Texas City Fire Department, along with supporting agencies, responded quickly and remained on scene. The fire is contained, but it is expected to burn for an extended period.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management and the Galveston County Health District advise at-risk individuals, especially those with pre-existing lung conditions, to remain indoors if they are in the area, as smoke inhalation may cause respiratory issues.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed. Stay safe, everyone.

🩵World Diabetes Day
This year, in observance of World Diabetes Day, we’re shining a light on the brave journey of the Cooper family from League City, whose young daughter’s near-fatal diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes led them to become champions of awareness. The Coopers are collaborating with the Galveston County Health District/Coastal Health & Wellness to raise awareness and encourage families to act promptly when something seems amiss. Their message: “Early detection + quick action = saved lives.”
The family initially mistook their daughter’s symptoms, vomiting and fatigue, as a stomach bug. But when confusion, hallucinations, and loss of coordination set in, it was revealed she was in diabetic ketoacidosis, and her blood sugar was over 500.
Medical teams at Texas Children’s Hospital intervened. Since then, the family has learned how to manage Type 1 diabetes through glucose monitoring, medication, and lifestyle changes.
⚠️Warning Signs to Watch For
Type 1 diabetes can appear suddenly, especially in children. What seems like a flu or virus may be something far more dangerous.
Be alert for signs such as:
Extreme thirst
Frequent urination
Persistent vomiting
Severe fatigue
Confusion or changes in behavior
Early recognition can be the difference between catching diabetes in time and facing a life-threatening emergency.
Sharing stories like the Coopers’ can help protect other families from the uncertainty and fear they faced. Awareness saves lives.

GCHD Participates in Marathon Air Monitoring Exercise

Our team had the opportunity to participate in a multi-agency air monitoring exercise hosted by Marathon on October 22. This training brought together partners from across the region, including the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management (GCOEM), the Texas City Fire Department (TCFD), the Texas City Office of Emergency Management (TCOEM), and the Galveston County Health District (GCHD).

During the exercise, teams practiced coordinated air monitoring and communication procedures, including field sampling and support from the operations center. The setup mirrored the roles we would expect to take on during an actual event, which made it a valuable hands-on experience for all involved.

GCHD appreciates the partnership and collaboration that made this training possible!
