More pics from the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 18!

It's an honor to be part of this amazing event each October, and this year we had another perfect day full of love, hope, and fun! Thank you to everyone who joined Team VPFW, donated to our fundraiser or stopped by our "most spirited tent" for a pic! 💗

We loved meeting so many survivors who are benefitting from the life-saving research and support the American Cancer Society provides as well as their family and friends supporting them on this journey. Remember: we are ALL worth the fight! 💞

💕🏃‍♀️Dr. Cara Hartle is running the New York City Marathon this Sunday, and her fundraiser for Every Mother Counts is in the final stretch! Donate to support Dr. Hartle and EMC in the next 48 hours, and VPFW WILL MATCH YOUR DONATION! Donate here: https://give.everymothercounts.org/fundraiser/6285287

When Dr. Hartle realized it had been 20 years since she ran her first marathon as a recent college grad (for Train to End Stroke with the American Stroke Association), she just knew she had to complete one more full marathon to celebrate the anniversary. Having 3 kids and starting a career as an OB/GYN meant she’d taken a long hiatus from running; but she wanted to make this last race epic and set her sights on the New York City Marathon. 🗽💕

After applying for a few charity marathon teams, Dr. Hartle was thrilled to learn that the nonprofit Every Mother Counts had chosen her! And who could blame them?! As one of our most community-focused OB/GYNs, Dr. Hartle fully believes in the EMC mission: for all people, everywhere, to experience a safe, respectful, and equitable journey through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. It’s a tall order, accomplished through advocacy, raising awareness, and investing in community partners who are working to solve the issues affecting maternal health. 💞

Dr. Hartle has always felt strongly about what EMC supports all over the world. During her OB/GYN residency, she worked in Ghana providing maternity care to women who desperately needed it - many of whom would have died had she not been there. She’s grateful and excited to fundraise to help more mothers around the world receive safe and equitable care. 💗

With support from her family, coworkers, and fellow mama running buddies (shoutout to the Fit4Mom Richmond group that got her back into running!), it’s go time for Dr. Hartle. Make a donation to support her and her Every Mother Counts fundraising initiative in the next 48 hours, and VPFW will gladly match it! Here’s to Dr. Hartle, her amazing running journey, and her dedication to Every Mother Counts. 💖🏃‍♀️

💜 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Dr. Ashley Uvanni has created a guide to accessible resources for victims of domestic violence in Virginia. In it, you can learn how to identify domestic abuse — which is not limited to physical violence — and access support through hotlines, text lines, online chats, housing aid, shelters, and healthcare providers who are often some of the safest and easiest people you can reach out to when you need help.

You can find this guide to domestic violence resources at https://vpfw.com/blog/domestic-violence-resources/. Please know that you can always feel safe discussing your situation with your OB/GYN provider at VPFW. They are here to help and will connect you with resources you need to pursue safety.

*If you experience physical violence, one of the most important resources available to survivors in the Richmond area is the Bon Secours Violence Response Team. You can visit any Bon Secours hospital and ask to be seen by the Violence Response Team. This is a team of nurses and victim services advocates who are specially trained to support, both physically and emotionally, the survivors of violence and abuse.

Dr. Uvanni is involved with training some of the Violence Response Team’s “safe nurses” on how to conduct pelvic exams and drew from this experience as she put together this resource guide for survivors. She is also on the planning committee for the team’s fundraising gala, which VPFW was proud to sponsor this past weekend. 💜

💕 We are so excited to welcome one more OB/GYN to the VPFW family this fall: Dr. Natalie Macdisi is now seeing patients at VPFW’s St. Francis and Prince George offices!

Having grown up in Virginia, Dr. Macdisi is thrilled to return to her roots as her OB/GYN career takes off. What she loves most about this field is the opportunity to take care of women throughout their entire lifespan, from adolescence to post menopause.

Dr. Macdisi is especially passionate about guiding women through the journey of pregnancy and delivery. From kick counts to breastfeeding and all the questions in between, Dr. Macdisi guides with compassion through this momentous time in her patients’ lives.

At VPFW, Dr. Macdisi enjoys the collaboration among her colleagues and the state-of-the-art facilities that allow her to offer the best, most current care possible. That’s extremely important for her continuous goal of building trusted, lasting relationships with her patients - whom she is excited to meet!

Dr. Macdisi is also thrilled to have found a practice so dedicated to serving the community. She looks forward to our community outreach events and drives (including our Prince George Mama and Baby Supplies Drive & Giveaway coming up on Nov. 13!).

When she’s not seeing patients or delivering babies, Dr. Macdisi enjoys spending time exploring the Richmond area, playing tennis, skiing, and painting. You can learn more and schedule an appointment with Dr. Macdisi at https://vpfw.com/provider/natalie-macdisi-m-d/. Please help us welcome her to the VPFW family! 💞

💗 What makes triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) so challenging?

In her new blog post (https://vpfw.com/blog/what-is-triple-negative-breast-cancer/), nurse practitioner Hollie Jones explores how TNBC differs from other breast cancers, including its lack of estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors that many common treatments target. She also discusses TNBC’s distinct risk profile.

Factors linked to higher TNBC risk include:

• Family history of breast cancer
• Birth control pill usage > 10 years
• Dense breast tissue

While early detection is important for all breast cancers, learn how these differences could affect preventative strategies for TNBC. Your doctor can give you specific recommendations based on your personal risk in order to give you the best chance against TNBC. 💓

Thanks to everyone who came out to walk with Team VPFW or donated to our fundraiser to help the American Cancer society continue its life-saving research and support for local breast cancer patients, survivors, and families.

We loved meeting so many survivors who have benefitted from this research and support, and we’re thrilled to offer so many more women the opportunity for early detection. Schedule your annual screening mammogram at vpfw.com. You are ALL worth the fight. 💓

💞 October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. We are thinking of those for whom “can’t wait to meet you” turned into “I’ll never forget you.” There are many more of us out there than we may realize. Know that you are not alone, and it’s okay to talk about it.

If you are hurting, please find a list of pregnancy loss resources, compiled with love and compassion by VPFW patient Rachel Ramirez, as well as Rachel’s story, at https://vpfw.com/blog/a-story-of-loss-and-hope-how-one-patients-experiences-with-multiple-miscarriages-led-her-to-compile-a-list-of-the-most-helpful-pregnancy-loss-resources/. Rachel has been through this loss multiple times and offers hope and support to others on their healing journey. 💗

VPFW volunteers helped the American Cancer Society stuff 300 goody bags for breast cancer survivors who will be at the Making Strides Walk this Saturday. 💗 Now it’s time to support them! Get decked out in your pink and come walk with Team VPFW down beautiful Monument Avenue on Saturday. The festival in Monroe Park opens at 9am, and the walk begins at 10am.

Go to vpfw.com/BreastCancerAwarenessMonth or the link in our bio to join our team or make a donation towards support for survivors and lifesaving research at labs around the country.

We had the privilege of touring one of these labs right here in Richmond at VCU Health, where scientists are studying things like what impacts the growth of cancer cells and how genetic mutations might play a part. They’re also exploring how using other mechanisms—besides killing the cancer cells themselves—might allow them to manipulate the environment where cancer cells are able to grow so that they can prevent them from spreading. “There more ways to win the war than just killing soldiers. You could also cut the water supply or disrupt the lines of communications,” says Dr. Paula Bos, head of the Bos Laboratory at VCU.

With research grants down this year, the current need for funding for everything from staffing to costly equipment at labs like Dr. Bos’ is immense. You can donate to our Making Strides fundraising team at the link in our bio or go to vpfw.com/BreastCancerAwarenessMonth. And we’d love to see you out there on Saturday! 💓

Our Story

We are a Richmond ob/gyn practice with an expert team comprised of thirty compassionate providers and more than one hundred fifty staff members who are dedicated to giving you the best, personalized care possible. We strive to be your partners and collaborators, working to guide you towards the treatment plans and preventive screenings that fit your lifestyle and meet your medical needs.

You know that you’re more than a number, so why put up with an ob/gyn who treats like one? At Virginia Physicians for Women, we provide you with the attention and care you deserve, and you’ll find that we treat you as the unique and dynamic woman you are.

As a physician-owned practice, we are invested in putting you and your health first. We’re your neighbors and your friends. We are part of your community, and, together, we can make the women in our region healthier and happier. In fact, even beyond our workdays, you’ll find us volunteering, supporting organizations like March of Dimes, the Bon Secours forensic nursing program, American Cancer Society, the Ronald McDonald House, and more. Why do we do it? It’s for the same reason that motivates us to serve the women of our region…it’s simply the right thing to do. Of course, we have a lot of fun along the way, too.
