So many mamas don’t even realize there’s a name for what they’re feeling.

DMER is caused by a sudden drop in dopamine when your milk lets down.

Cognitive and behavioral solutions like grounding thoughts can help refocus the mind, bringing awareness back to the present moment and simple breathing exercises can help provide a sense of calm and control during the milk letdown.

As a Black lactation consultant, I honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not only for his words, but for his unwavering commitment to justice and equity.

“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I don’t do this work only because I was once a breastfeeding mom who wanted to turn lived experience into a career but because of the history of black breastfeeding and black maternal health. Because advocacy and education are still required often in rooms where I am the only one willing to speak up. This is the type of support and compassion I hope all families can value when they receive support from me. Families deserve care that sees them fully and protects them fiercely.

I honor the legacy of speaking the truth.

When Supplementation Becomes Medically Necessary

Certain signs mean baby may not be getting enough milk right now and protecting baby’s hydration, blood sugar, and growth comes first.

Remember:
✨ Supplementation can be temporary
✨ Breastfeeding support should continue
✨ A plan can protect both baby and your milk supply

As an IBCLC I can help determine how much, how to supplement, and how to get back to exclusive breastfeeding if that’s your goal.

One of the biggest reasons parents worry about low milk supply is because we forget how small a newborn’s stomach actually is and how breast milk is constantly changing.

In the first days of life, your baby’s stomach is tiny closer to the size of a cherry or walnut. They’re not meant to take in large volumes at once. Small, frequent feeds are normal and important, not a sign that you’re not making enough milk.

As your baby grows, your milk supply shifts too. Around three months postpartum, milk production is no longer driven mainly by pregnancy hormones. Instead, it’s regulated by the information your body has gathered from weeks of feeding: how often milk is removed, how effectively baby feeds, and how your body responds.

For some families, supply truly is low. For others, milk is there, but something is getting in the way: latch issues, oral function, fl**ge sizes, feeding frequency, stress, medical conditions like PCOS, or mixed messages from the internet.

That’s why lactation care is never one-size-fits-all. We look at the whole picture baby, parent, feeding, and real life not just ounces in a bottle.

If you’re worried about your supply, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

How does publishing this information actually help families if there is no accessible alternative provided?

Releasing formula testing results without a clear, funded plan leaves parents anxious and unsupported during one of the most critical transitions: pregnancy to postpartum. Information without access is not protection.

Will there be funding to ensure families can receive timely lactation support to safely navigate feeding decisions? Will resources be allocated to expand donor milk access, especially when counties like Sumter still do not have a local milk depot or donor milk infrastructure?

Families cannot be expected to absorb alarming information without solutions. Lactation care, donor milk programs, and community-based support must be part of the response not an afterthought.

As a local lactation provider, I am actively applying for grants to help cover lactation support for families whose insurance I do not accept or who rely on Medicaid. But individual providers cannot carry the burden alone.

If the goal is infant safety and family health, then education must be paired with access, funding, and real-world support. Otherwise, what are families supposed to do with this information?

Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis on Friday announced a new initiative aimed at improving the safety of baby formula, citing test results that found elevated levels of toxins in many popular products sold in the state. 🔗⬇️

The velcro stigma that babies get is a misinterpreted need. Your baby needs time to adjust from being in the womb to now being in the outside world and time to recover from being born just like you are recovering. Give your baby some grace and hold them. Baby carriers are your best friend.
