🤰 Tool of the Week: Your 2026 Perinatal Care Checklist 🗓️

Navigating insurance benefits while managing pregnancy or new parenthood can feel like a full-time job! Before 2026 begins, take a moment to use this quick checklist to understand your perinatal mental health resources:

✓ Will you likely meet your deductible this year? (Think pregnancy, postpartum, or fertility treatments.)
✓ Do you have an FSA or HSA you can use for therapy?
✓ Does your insurance offer out-of-network reimbursement?
✓ Selecting a new plan? Have you deeply compared the mental health benefits?
✓ Could group therapy or a hybrid care model (individual + group) work for you?

Don't let valuable benefits go unused! We know decoding these answers is hard, especially when you're exhausted.

❄️ Recognizing SAD in the Postpartum Season

December marks the beginning of deeper winter and the recognition of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Awareness Month.

For new and expecting parents, the emotional impact of shorter, darker days can be compounded by hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and the demands of postpartum life. It can be difficult to distinguish between "baby blues" and true seasonal change.

SAD can look like:
Increased fatigue (beyond normal new parent exhaustion).
Loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy.
Persistent low mood that aligns with the season.
Cravings for carbohydrates and weight gain.

💛 If you are struggling with a persistent dip in mood that coincides with the winter months, please know that support is available. We specialize in helping parents navigate these specific challenges.

🛑 Self-Care Isn't Selfish—It's Essential

Let's debunk a common myth: Self-care is not selfish.
In fact, the opposite is true!

The more you honor your own needs for rest, support, and healing, the better you’ll be able to show up and care for the people you love. You can't pour from an empty cup. Investing in your own mental health is investing in your relationships.

Give yourself permission to prioritize you today.

Ready to start honoring your needs?

🛠️ Tool of the Week: The Two-Week Check-In 🗓️

As new parents, fatigue is inevitable. But when does exhaustion cross the line into something more? Depression isn't the same as exhaustion, and knowing the difference is crucial for your well-being.

Normal New Parent Fatigue:
You're tired, but a nap or a break helps.
You still feel moments of joy or connection.
You feel like yourself, just stretched thin.

High-Functioning Postpartum Depression (PPD):
Sleep doesn't feel restorative, even when you get it.
You feel emotionally flat or detached, even during "good" moments.
Persistent guilt, self-criticism, or thoughts like "I'm failing."
Anxiety or racing thoughts you can't turn off.
Crying often—or feeling nothing at all.

If these feelings have lasted more than two weeks, or if they're keeping you from feeling connected to yourself or your baby, it's time to reach out.

Remember: You don't need to hit rock bottom to deserve help. 🪷
