Wyoming is facing a growing crisis of maternity care deserts, with multiple counties lacking labor and delivery services due to hospital closures. These deserts are a result of financial distress for rural hospitals. These situations force women to travel long distances for care, increasing risks for both mothers and babies.

Contributing factors:
Financial struggles: Rural hospitals that provide maternity services often struggle financially due to low delivery volumes, high fixed costs, and a high percentage of births covered by Medicaid.
Hospital closures: Several hospitals have closed their labor and delivery units in recent years, further reducing access.

Consequences for pregnant people and babies
Longer travel times: Many women are forced to travel much farther to reach a hospital for delivery, often facing dangerous road conditions during the winter months.
