First, I always make time to at least read Doug Nelson's articles in my monthly massage magazine- I love this particular article because it articulates the frustration many encounter with medical physicians - the very little training they have in "musculoskeletal conditions and the dynamics of muscular relationships"- as the doctor in this article says herself. So many times in my practice, I've encountered clients in pain who went to their doctor first and were offered only two solutions: physical therapy or medication. Sometimes these are great solutions- but often, the lack of muscle knowledge/dynamics leaves a giant gap in which many clients fall & neither solution ultimately helps. This is where massage therapists can really step into their power; there is some evidence the medical industry is starting to see that... but OH SO SLOWLY. Any who- hopefully you can access this article & read specifically about how "it feels enormously satisfying to have the provider palpate the pain" & how being able to explain *why* there is pain makes all the difference.
