Menopause is often blamed for sudden weight gain… but in Ayurveda, this transition is understood a little differently.
Menopause marks the shift from the Pitta stage of life into the Vata stage. Vata governs movement, change, and transformation. And menopause is exactly that; a profound physiological transition in the body.
During times of great change, the body becomes protective. It creates stability where it can.
One of the ways the body does this is by holding onto a bit more weight, particularly around the abdomen. In Ayurveda, this can be understood as the body creating a buffer or barrier to support itself through a turbulent period of hormonal and nervous system change.
At the same time, many women are navigating enormous mental and emotional stress during this stage of life. Careers, aging parents, shifting identities, changing bodies. When stress becomes chronic, cortisol rises and the body becomes more likely to store visceral fat around the midsection.
So the weight gain many women notice during menopause is not simply a lack of discipline.
It is often the body responding to change, stress, and instability.
The goal during this phase is not to fight the body.
It is to stabilize Vata, nourish the nervous system, and support the body as it moves into a new season of life.
When we work with this transition instead of against it, the body becomes far more willing to rebalance.
Menopause is not a disease. It is a natural physiological transition, just like puberty.
And with the right support, it can become one of the most powerful transitions in a woman’s life.
