It's January. It's time to rant about the environment. And how your amazing body is keeping you safe plus how to support it in that quest.

Do you have party tricks? Or did you as a kid? Were you a kid that sat in intense yoga poses just to watch TV? Or put your feet over your head and said- look at what I can do! If so, how are your joints now? Did you gain weight in weird places? Do you now have heartburn or IBS? Or maybe you have had IBS the whole time!

As a doctor with hEDS, I suggest that my patients take collagen supporting supplements and engage in regular exercise that strengthens their joints. But there is so little information available about how effective these treatments are long term. There's so much more to learn!

I have experienced chronic joint pain for as long as I can remember and also had lots of cool party tricks as a kid, teen, young adult- probably now but I no longer try to activate them! (I went down the photo rabbit hole looking for a picture of me touching my toes to my nose for this post- I know that I have one somewhere!!)

Now I know that is hEDS. It goes along with a bunch of other issues and it can be managed. It helps to know that I have it, it informs how I exercise and some of the supplements that I take daily. To learn more about EDS and hEDS read this

SIBO is Small Intestine Bacteria Overgrowth. And it is responsible for up to 70% of IBS diagnoses. It used to be really hard to diagnose, so treatments remained elusive. But with modern technology, testing is so much easier and more affordable- treatment has been revolutionized!! (IMO is Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth, a separate but related syndrome)

SIBO and IMO can both cause bloating, abdominal pain, food reactions, heartburn and reflux, diarrhea and/or constipation.

IBS is an umbrella term for chronic GI complaints that don't fit the diagnosis for inflammatory bowel disease or GI cancers. As such, they get dismissed and people are frequently told that there is nothing that can be done or that it's all "in their head." Ugh. It's so frustrating for me to hear when patients feel dismissed like that. OR doctors tell people to stop eating legumes. And apples. And garlic. And onions. And wheat. And sugar. And dairy. And eggs. And don't eat too much, don't eat too little. Spread meals out- no snacking! But wait, balance your blood sugar with 5 small meals a day.
Enough!! Just get to the root cause and treat it. Eat food. Love your body.

There really aren't "good" foods and "bad" foods. There are unhealthy relationships with food and there is Celiac disease. In the case of Celiac, yes, avoid gluten forever. Still doesn't make bread a "bad" food.
My goal with myself, my family and my patients is for us to digest well and no longer need to avoid foods to feel good. The ability to digest well changes relationships to food.
